Esther Lee Leach: John, your career journey prior to creating Zakham Real Estate Group is fascinating. You are a veteran of Operation Desert Storm and served nine years in the US Army, founded a mortgage company and also worked as a financial advisor at Merrill Lynch. Let’s start from the beginning of my career. What path did you follow after graduating from the University of Colorado?

John Zakham: I was in the military during my time at CU and was involved in the SNP (Army Concurrent Membership Program). I was a reservist and also in ROTC with the goal of paying for the military for medical school. in Saudi Arabia. I was activated in November 1990 and was sent to Saudi Arabia shortly after. I had to withdraw from my first year of university and it was a very stressful and challenging time for me and my family. I served on an OR team that took over a Saudi military hospital in Iraq, Kuwait, bordering Saudi Arabia. I grew both mentally, physically and spiritually. I met the bravest and most interesting people and learned a lot about myself, became much more cultured and gained a very worldly perspective.

JZ: When I returned from active duty in May 1991, I re-enrolled at CU Denver and began working full-time as an Orthopedic Scrub Tech at Presbyterian/St. Luke Medical Center (PSL). I was working full time at PSL while completing my degree in biology. After college and some serious thought, I reconsidered my medical pursuit. I realized that medicine is not for me and I don’t want to spend my life in the hospital. I was immediately hired by some medical sales company that sold medical equipment to operating rooms and moved to Hermosa Beach, California. I started my MBA at Pepperdine and returned to Denver in 1998 after a few years in California and missing my family.

We went through several recessions and my dad was always able to provide for us because of real estate. He taught us the value of investing and the right way to buy property.

ELL: You then began your career in the financial industry starting your own company, Unified Mortgage, in 1998 and then moving into mortgage banking in 2001. What attracted you to this industry?

JZ: My high school friends and CU roommate Art Vasquez suggested I look into real estate and start a mortgage company. He owned a real estate company and thought there would be great synergy between our businesses. I decided to leave medicine entirely and go into real estate and finance. The mortgage industry was challenging at the time, but the real estate market was on fire, and Denver was booming. The mortgage business taught me about banking, finance and the business side of real estate. After a successful career in that industry, I needed a bigger challenge. In 2005, I left the mortgage industry and a friend took me under his wing. I am his partner at Merrill Lynch.

As one of the top five investment firms at the time, I thought this would be a big step in my career. Because I had a great network of doctors and athletes, he thought it would be a good challenge for me as well as reduce my desire to grow. A few years later and with some of my newfound knowledge, I decided I wanted to combine my real estate, mortgage finance and money management experience into my own private equity fund. My brother Mike was running a real estate office at the time, and we decided to partner together, buy a building next to Gov’s Park Hall, and with the help of a third partner and one of my best friends, Peter Forsberg, we started the first private equity fund. We launched as Champion Diversified Private Equity LLC in 2007/8. With emphasis on increasing density and zoning. We became the real estate portion of our investors’ portfolios.

ELL: What motivated you and Mike to create Zakhem Realty Group and what kind of projects does this company develop?

JZ: We’ve always been in real estate. My father Jim, (who recently passed away, may God rest his soul) invested in real estate when he got to Denver. We went through several recessions and my dad was always able to provide for us because of real estate. He taught us the value of investing and the right way to buy property. My father taught languages and also worked as a professor at DU, but his main interest was always real estate. We grew up helping manage some of those properties as well as learning hands-on what it takes to maintain them. We learned a lot about owning, managing and taking care of real estate from my dad, he was truly an inspirational man and we owe a lot of our success to my parents commitment to family and making sure we have it. A necessary tool for success My mother Maya has always been the backbone of our family and to this day she is our biggest fan and helps us stay on track by managing our office. Zhor Real Estate Group is the culmination of years of experience, effort, dedication, timing and a little bit of luck. This is the umbrella organization that oversees and manages our private equity funds.

In 2017, we sold our office next to Gov’s Park Hall and purchased the Brind Mansion on Capitol Hill, diagonally across from the Governor’s Mansion. After a significant renovation, we moved into the building in April 2018. This is a beautiful building and we are very proud to call it the home of Zhob Real Estate Group.

ELL: Your family has been investing in Colorado for nearly three decades. Tell us more about your family history in Colorado.

Zakhem Property Management

JZ: My uncle Sam Zakham moved here for his PhD in the 60s and our family immigrated here in 1977 after spending time in Lebanon and Dubai. My parents wanted us to study in America, and since my uncle had settled in Colorado, it made sense to move our family here. We had another uncle and some cousins are moving here. My uncle paved the way for us and created a good reputation for himself and our family because of his political involvement. He served in the state House and Senate and was appointed as the United States Ambassador to Bahrain by President Ronald Reagan and Vice President George W. Bush.
