Wyse Property Management Ireland – Joe Wyse: Modestly born in a Rathgar basement in Dublin, the former bank manager grew Wyse Property Management into Ireland’s largest residential property management company

It might be an exaggeration to say that Joe Wyse, who died at the age of 74, created a new industry in Ireland, but the claim still contains a large element of truth.

From modest beginnings in a basement in Rathgar in Dublin in 1980, the former bank manager has grown Wyse Property Management (WPM) to easily become the largest residential property management company in Ireland with a straightforward and hands-on approach that has seen the success achieved through attention to detail.

After leaving school at Gormanston College in 1959, Wyse joined the National Bank, serving in various locations including Abbeyfeale, Killarney and Dublin and eventually, in the late 1970s, becoming assistant manager in Bray, Australia. Wicklow County.

He was born to Listowel, the eldest son of Jim, also a bank manager, and of Kitty (née Doyle).

It was while stationed in Bray that Joe, then still a bachelor, was informed by his friend and colleague Nuala McNamara that it was the company’s policy not to promote unmarried staff to managers. This gave him the push he needed to get out on his own.

Having noticed the difficulties his clients often had with real estate investing and having experienced them himself as a homeowner in a Ballsbridge condominium, Wyse believed he saw a gap in the market for a company specializing in managing such properties. The time was right for such an undertaking. Section 23 of the 1981 Finance Act introduced significant tax breaks for residential property investors, which led to a massive increase in condominiums.

Another breakthrough for WPM came in 1983, when Peter Cosgrave of builders Cosgrave Brothers asked Wyse to set up a company to manage Belville, a new apartment complex in Donnybrook in Dublin. Joe Cosgrave states: “Joe did so well that the model was copied by almost every management company.”

The company has grown very quickly and today employs more than 70 people. She managed, remarkably, to retain all of her employees during the 2008 property collapse.

Wyse was also innovative in establishing a computer business with software specifically designed for the Irish apartment market by technical director George Murphy and in creating new types of leases.

Joe Cosgrave believes that part of Wyse’s success is due to having “a great way about him … he was a bit of a psychologist, a problem solver rather than a problem creator”.

Outside of business, Wyse collected antique locks and helped found the European Association of Antique Lock Collectors, hosting its annual conference in Dublin.

Passionate about golf, he has been a member at various times of the clubs of Lahinch, Edmondstown and Royal Dublin. Also a member of the Aer Lingus choir in his early days, he had a wonderful bass voice, which he used to great effect in his singing of

He was active in the Gormanston Past Pupils Union, being a member of the committee until the time of his death.

Joe Wyse eventually married, at the age of 48, Josephine O’Keeffe, who had founded and managed one of the first Irish restaurants in Paris in the 1980s before returning to Dublin.

The judge said that the fact that he suffered from a gambling addiction does not justify the offense, but puts it in context. He said he had no doubts that he had learned a valuable lesson and paid a price for what he did.

Judge Sheahan sentenced Power to three years in prison, but suspended the sentence in its entirety under strict conditions, including repayment of the amount due within six months.

In an earlier sentencing hearing, Garda Dineen said Power had been employed as the company’s lease manager for four years. Her duties included viewing and inspecting properties, entering into leases, and making contact with tenants. She had 75 to 80 properties in her portfolio.
