CROMWELL — Local officials are hailing shipping giant Amazon’s move into the city’s largest building in the North Tier Industrial Park as “a big win.”
Amazon signed a deal with Indiana-based developer Scannell Properties to occupy the 403,000-square-foot warehouse at 120 County Line Road, which sits on about 34 acres.
Scannell negotiated with a number of nationally known companies, said Mayor Enzo Faienza, who made the announcement on his Facebook page. “This was a great team effort all around.”

Amazon now operates two other fulfillment centers in the state — in North Haven and Windsor — in addition to a “sort” center in Wallingford and delivery station in Bristol.
“Having Amazon as a corporation in our community is incredible. It’s going to provide jobs, taxes to the community and also (benefits) to other businesses,” Salvatore said. “It’s impressive. It’s the size of three football fields. It’s huge.”
The City Council previously approved a seven-year tax abatement for the facility. Scannell will continue to pay property taxes to the city for the land, vehicles and contents.
Area businesses are also expected to benefit from the deal, which should create a ripple effect, the city manager said.

At the new facility, employees will pick, pack and ship larger items, such as mattresses, kayaks, grills and exercise equipment. Amazon will hire workers for jobs in human resources, operations management, security, safety, finance and information technology, the company said in a press release.
Faienza thanked Salvatore, City Council members and Development Director Stuart Popper, as well as others for their help in cementing the plan.
“This is a huge win for our city to have a national company like Amazon move in,” said Faienza, who hopes some of those jobs will go to residents. “Regardless, they will visit restaurants, liquor stores, convenience stores and grocery stores, with an added economic boost for in-house training sessions,” when administrators will hire caterers and other local services.
“It is a great victory. This is a proud day for Cromwell and, as mayor, I couldn’t be happier,” Faienza said.
