Todd-Williams got another three-pointer 30 seconds later, off another fast break and another pass from Ustby. The Tar Heels dominated the third quarter, ending the period with 35 points.

Greensboro, N.C. K. – The North Carolina women’s basketball team (25-7, 13-5 ACC) fell to No. 1 seed South Carolina (32-2, 15-1 SEC), 69-61, in the NCAA. Friday’s Sweet 16 tournament at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex.

Kelly made three more field goals, including another jumper and a pair of drives. South Carolina head coach Don Staley and North Carolina head coach Courtney Bangart opted to sideline their post players for the remainder of the first quarter, leading to more scoring by South Carolina.
However, the Tar Heels took a 23-22 lead into the second quarter. Physicality continued to show from both teams – the Hammecocks registered six personal fouls, but the Tar Heels could only make six of their 10 free throw attempts.
Outstanding guard play fueled South Carolina’s offense, with guards Zea Cook and Henderson scoring 26 of the Gamecocks’ 39 first-half possessions. Cook and Henderson took advantage of UNC’s 2-3 zone defense, nailing six three-pointers on a combined 11 attempts. South Carolina led 39-31 at halftime.
The Hammocks continued to find the basket on second chances and took the lead 10 three minutes into the third period. UNC went on a 6-0 run, but South Carolina continued to dominate on the glass, securing nearly every possession offensively.

Things started to go from bad to worse for North Carolina when Kelly scored offensively and defensively in a minute. South Carolina took a 56-45 lead into the fourth quarter.
Kelly scored seven of UNC’s 11 points in the first half of the fourth quarter. The Tar Heels forced several defensive stops, which led to back-to-back bases loaded by sophomore guard Kennedy Todd-Williams and Littlefield’s running back. South Carolina still led 65-59 with 3:18 to play.

For an entire season, the seemingly untouchable Hammecocks never fell below No. 1 in the AP Top 25. South Carolina has lost just two games this season — by an average of 1.5 points.
But South Carolina’s recent dominance doesn’t matter to UNC heading into tonight’s Sweet Sixteen matchup. For 40 minutes, the Tar Heels fought for every last ball and rebound.
