NORTH PROVIDENCE – The Tri-County Community Action Agency is putting the finishing touches on its newest location in the Marieville neighborhood of North Providence.

Tri-County President and CEO Joe DeSantis confirmed this week that the local nonprofit will soon open a food bank at 19 Volturno St. near Charles.

“I’ve been in this business for 48 years and we’ve always missed a presence in Marieville,” DeSantis said, adding that the nonprofit “I’m glad to be able to work there in collaboration and partnership with the mothers of Marieville,” another Service of the North Providence Food Bank.
“We don’t want to duplicate services, but complement what they do in the community,” DeSantis said. “We are really pleased with the partnership and look forward to integrating other programs such as rent relief. Bringing these services closer to people will make it more convenient for them and allow us to serve more people.”
Among Tri-County’s 13 locations across the state, North Providence is home to several, including the food bank and emergency services location on Emanuel Street. There is another location on Maple Avenue and Head Start preschool programs on Mineral Spring, Rockwell and Waterman streets.
The Volturno Street Food Bank was made possible in part by an $800,000 Community Services Block Grant. Federal grants provide funds to alleviate the causes and conditions of poverty in communities.

DeSantis said the grant will help pay for the first year of the new operation and that they plan to continue the program beyond this year. They are planning a similar effort in Johnston.
The building is owned by Mayor Charles Lombardi, who received a favorable advisory opinion from the Rhode Island Ethics Commission in April when he asked if he could lease his property to Tri-County.
Commissioners agreed the ethics code does not prohibit the mayor from leasing the building “to provide social services to North Providence residents who are in need.”
Tri-County is aiming to open Volturno Street in early 2022, but DeSantis said he’s working hard to open the doors as soon as possible. They had hoped to be open by now, he said, but faced various delays. Additional electrical work was required to support the food bank’s industrial refrigerators and freezers.

“We’re 90 to 95 percent done with the space,” he said. New color-coded shelves were installed, which made it easier for visitors to choose different goods.
In an effort to make the building more welcoming, Tri-County invited artists to submit ideas for a mural at the new food bank.
A $300 cash prize is available for the winning entry. The mural will be painted on an interior cinder block wall. The rules are:
• The mural should depict something important to the food bank, such as an orchard, a farmer’s market scene, a food tree/pyramid, or any other idea related to nutrition or healthy eating.

The final painting will measure 7 feet by 7 feet. All paint and supplies for the finished mural will be provided by Tri-County. The entry must include the artist’s name, contact information, and estimated cost of paint/supplies needed to complete the full-size mural. Tri-County may ask the artist to edit some or all of the items.
There is no limit to the number of entries that can be made. The deadline for applications is December 15. Submissions can be sent to [email protected]

Tri-County Roofing and Home Improvement recently celebrated the opening of its new Defiance location with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
Bill Voirol, president and founder of Tri-County Roofing and Home Improvement, formed a corporation in 2015 as Defiance Block Group to purchase the property at 925 S. Clinton St. The redevelopment of the shopping center and another metal building includes extensive interior and exterior modifications to bring it as close to “as new” condition as possible.
“I was looking for the right location in the area and this was a win-win situation,” Voirol said. “Instead of building a brand new building somewhere, my teams have the skills to do all the work, it’s a central property and it was a building that needed revitalization. The whole property is like a showroom where we show what we can do because we offer more than just roofing. We make windows, cladding, doors, remodel, etc. We received a lot of positive feedback from the community about this device update.”
