The name “Elverhøj” is pronounced “Elverhoy”, which is also the English spelling. The museum is named after a popular Danish folk play. The museum itself was actually the home of Viggo Brent-Erichsen and his wife, Martha Mott. They started building their house in 1950 and modeled it after 18th century farmhouses in northern Denmark. Cast ironwork, hand-painted wooden panels and an intricately carved redwood door are some of the building’s beautiful architectural details. The family donated their home and the museum opened its doors in 1988. Today, it is operated by the municipality of Solvang as a celebration of Danish culture and art.
