Cover Story(view full size image): The amount of solid and liquid organic waste as well as wastewater continues to increase worldwide; therefore, the need to reuse and recycle it becomes more and more urgent. In addition, the limited amount of fossil fuel resources and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions advocate for the production of renewable fuels. In this work, we analyze a sustainable second-generation process to produce biodiesel by transesterification of waste cooking oil combined with a third-generation cascade process to recycle incoming glycerol-rich wastewater. This is used as feed for microalgae, from which the oil is extracted to further produce biodiesel and close the cycle. The results of the pilot scale experiment confirmed the quality of the biodiesel; the yield obtained for the two-stage process confirms its competitiveness in the global market. Historic mining and milling practices dumped tailings into rivers and streams, spreading contaminants throughout the South Fork Coeur d’Alene River floodplain. Lead and other metals continue to pass through the Coeur d’Alene River system, floodplains, and chain lakes today. Metal concentrations tend to be high on the slopes between Smelterville and Kellogg due to past smelter air emissions, and contamination is often found in and near historic mine and mill sites. Contamination also comes from large piles of garbage and waste rock. As a result, soil, sediment, groundwater, and surface water are contaminated with lead and other heavy metals.
Cleanup processes include sampling of home grounds and public spaces. After determining the level of contamination in the residential grounds, the contaminated soil is removed and replaced with clean soil as needed. To assist landowners when digging, a visible fabric barrier is placed at the bottom depth where soil is removed and clean soil is placed. Cleanup activities are ongoing for mine and mill sites, areas where people recreate, and many other areas where health risks are higher because metal contamination is present and has not been cleaned up. .
Kellogg’s office serves as a local resource and is available to assist with questions and issues regarding cleanup. , EPA, and Panhandle Health District staff are working together to provide community education.
