Rhn Property Management – Effective asset management requires a mechanism for handling software inventory—both the type of products and the number of systems on which the software is installed. Red Hat Network’s Subscription Management Service provides that mechanism and provides transparency into both global account-wide subscription allocations and specific subscriptions assigned to a single system.

Many software companies base their products on the licenses that are sold. At Red Hat, our software is already available under the GNU Public License v2, which allows general access to our source. Our products are available through subscriptions, which define the services we provide (such as content delivery, updates, knowledge base and support levels) for these products. Our subscriptions are allocated to individual servers and this entitles the server to receive support.

Red Hat Network Subscription Management establishes the relationship between the product subscriptions you have available and the elements of your IT infrastructure where those subscriptions are deployed. Subscription management in the customer portal is one means of managing subscription-related systems.
An IT administrator needs to know what products are available, where these product subscriptions are assigned, and what systems are being managed. For this, Red Hat has a subscription management service through Red Hat Network Subscription Management, which is managed locally (individual system) or globally (all servers in the environment) through Red Hat Subscription Manager. The ultimate goal of subscription management is to allow administrators to see where their products are deployed within their infrastructure. There are several reasons for this:
Subscription Management in the Customer Portal is the web version of Red Hat Subscription Manager. It provides an organization-wide method for tracking software products and subscriptions deployed to an account, such as the systems being managed, the effective dates of subscription agreements, and where subscriptions are attached. Subscription management in the customer portal helps to provide an overview of subscriptions and products in the infrastructure – it does not limit installations and does not provide proactive enforcement of installations.

In that case, an organization record with an on-premises subscription management application organization is added to the inventory in Customer Portal Subscription Management. This helps IT administrators maintain software inventory and plan their infrastructures in a way that was not possible in a traditional channel-based system.

Subscription management in the customer portal is certificate-based as each system is issued an X.509 certificate that identifies it to the subscription service and CDN (certificate of identity). When a new subscription is attached to the system, Subscription Management in the Customer Portal issues an X.509 Certificate of Entitlement containing the subscription information. When a product is installed, then Customer Portal Subscription Management issues an X.509 product certificate that identifies that unique product installation on that system.
Using certificates simplifies the process of managing individual subscriptions and products for a single system while making the process more secure.
Customer Portal Subscription Management and RHN Classic are mutually exclusive. The system is either managed under one subscription management service or another, not both, but these systems “work together”. If the system is registered with Customer Portal Subscription Management, then there will not be any errors registered in the legacy RHN Classic tools and vice versa. Both services will recognize subscriptions assigned to the system.
Subscription management in the Customer Portal is available only if the user has the appropriate user permissions for the Red Hat login. Otherwise, the subscription management area of the customer portal is limited.
