1122 is a nice looking brownstone located in one of the safest areas of the city. There are about 12-15 residents in the building of varying ages, but mostly in their 30s. There’s a courtyard with lots of plants and trees and it’s pretty nice, but it needs some work, like new benches and cleaning up some junk in the back corner. The apartment is nothing special, but it is large, relatively cheap and in a great location. There are 3 floors including a loft bedroom with a full bath, a mid level kitchen and living room with a living room open to the upper level and a very large lower level bedroom with a full bath. There is only one window on the middle floor, but it is a massive window facing the street. When I moved in, in the middle of summer, the central air conditioner broke. The few weeks it took to fix the situation was brutal because they couldn’t fix it and had to install AC units in every apartment. Our one large window wasn’t exactly a great place to put one of these, and the bottom floor didn’t cool very well. They are pet friendly and that along with the yard to easily walk my dog was the deciding factor for staying here. Overall I’d recommend it if you’re on a budget, have pets and want a good location, but there are plenty of nicer, more modern places out there.

Matteo Renzi’s departure from the Italian Democratic Party (PD) has been a long time coming. As its leader since 2013, he has called on the party of ex-communists and Christian Democrats to become a great “party of the nation” and appeal to voters disillusioned with Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia. However, since Renzi’s resignation as prime minister at the end of 2016, the PD has returned to social democratic rhetoric, culminating in the election of Nicola Zingaretti as its leader in January. With the entire political field, Renzi is now bidding to create his own “liberal-reform” force — Italia Viva.

During his initial rise, Renzi cast himself in the image of Tony Blair – a “wrecking man” who breaks old conventions. After becoming leader of the PD when the Five Star Movement (M5s) besieged the established parties, he adopted a rhetoric of innovation and presented himself as a charismatic leader in direct contact with voters. After his resignation at the end of 2016 – in the wake of a failed referendum on strengthening the executive – he praised Emmanuel Macron’s success in polarizing politics between liberal Europeanism and national populism. Still, he may have somewhat more difficulty pulling off the same trick in Italy in 2019.
The creation of Renzi’s Italia Viva is actually just part of a wider reshuffle in which independent Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and the eclectic M5 remain in office but change their coalition partners. Matteo Salvini withdrew his support for Conte in early August in the hope of forcing an early general election, but instead Zingaretti joined the government, creating a new M5s-PD alliance. Renzi was instrumental in creating this coalition because he feared that the alternative – early elections – would destroy his base in parliament. Yet it confuses his own role as a staunch defender of the engaged liberal center.
Indeed, Conte’s second government itself corresponds to what former prime minister Romano Prodi called the “Ursula coalition” – an alliance of those forces, including the M5, which backed Ursula von der Leyen as European Commission president last summer. The embrace of the formerly anti-establishment M5 also represents a change of direction on the part of Brussels, which is now seeking not only to defeat “populist” forces, but rather to integrate and moderate them. This, as well as Renzi’s own support for the new government, appears to undermine the prospect of a Macron-style uprising in Italy.
As the PD strengthened its return to government, Renzi’s long-awaited splinter group attracted far fewer MPs than expected. It will start with around 20 MPs and 10 senators, including Agriculture Minister Teresa Bellanova and prominent former minister Maria Elena Boschi. Yet even close Renzi allies such as Andrea Marcucci (PD chairwoman in the Senate) have refused to abandon their roles in the old party, and so far polls suggest Renzi will only get about 5 percent of the vote, barely above the minimum for parliamentary representation.

However, Renzi is not only acting from a position of weakness. Speaking to Conte by phone on Monday night, he suggested his move would broaden the government’s base and allow it to draw centrists and former supporters of Berlusconi into its fold. Forza Italia MPs dissatisfied with Salvini’s leadership of the right may find their way into Renzi’s new car. But even with reduced numbers in parliament, Renzi retains his role as king – able to pull the rug out from under the government and no longer constrained by internal PD politics.
Whether Renzi can lead the centrist forces remains an open question. It is a crowded field, in which not only the rival We Are Europes movement, led by his former finance minister Carlo Calenda, but also the increasingly prominent Conte are operating. The prime minister is seen as a weak figure in the M5s-Lega government but has been widely praised for his rejection of Matteo Salvini. The PD itself has a largely older and middle-class profile (it finished only fourth among working-class and unemployed Italians in 2018), and Italia Viva appears to be seeking support among the same group of voters.
Renzi’s hopes rely primarily on exploiting internal tensions
