Proway Property Management – After the arrival of the British Army at Possession Point (now Hollywood Park next to Possession Street) in 1841, the 800 or so volunteer soldiers from India and Bangladesh were stationed at West Point (hill of Water Street). After that, the area west of Hollywood Park was called Sai Ying Pun 西營盤, which means “Western Garrison”. Flourishing crafts required the construction of piers, docks, warehouses and properties to accommodate traders for rice, dry seafood and herbal medicine, and the workers who supported these activities. Even today, remnants of the early colonial past can still be found in the district. The Second World War brought mass destruction, which led to the reconstruction of many buildings into four to six-story tenement buildings with shops on the ground floor. Rapid population growth and technological advancement required these post-war buildings and high-rises to be redeveloped.
There are many prestigious colleges and schools can be found in this district, namely King’s College, St Clare Primary, St. Stephen Girls College, St. Paul’s College, etc.
