Fuquay-Varina is in Wake County. Fuquay-Varina was founded in 1909.
The story of the city’s current name and name change is an interesting story, or in modern jargon; it is difficult. The town was named in part after William Fuquay, an early French settler, and veteran of the American Revolutionary War. He originally purchased 1,000 acres in or about 1805 where the town of Fuquay-Varina is located today. When William Fuquay arrived, this area was called Sippihaw supposedly after the Native Americans of the area.

In the mid-1850s William Fuquay’s grandson Stephen Fuquay was cultivating his tobacco plantation, when he discovered a mineral spring. This spring was first used for drinking water, however, Stefano decided that the mineral water had healing powers. As the news spread, the well became a destination for people from far and wide to “take water.”
These “taking the waters” lead to annual celebrations at the mineral spring on Easter Monday and America’s Independence Day. The implementation of railroads in the area made transportation easier, and hotels were built near the springs to accommodate tourists. Stephen Fuquay sold the spring to a group of investors in 1860. To help market the mineral spring the investors formed the Chalybeate Springs Company.
The town’s second name, “Varina,” has an interesting origin as well. During the American Civil War a woman would write to the men serving to help strengthen their morale. This practice was common on both sides during the Civil War, and this tradition has continued to the present day with school children writing to our ministers abroad. It was very common that the letter writers had never met, and it was very common that they never would. However, for anyone who has served our nation, receiving mail from home was as important as the food you ate, and even the weapon you carried. As evidenced by the facts, no one ever ran out of phones, and people would run out of chow and forget to clean their weapons all the time.
Virginia Arey (most likely from Cumberland County, North Carolina) and Union Army soldier James D. Ballentine had a correspondence relationship and never met. At the beginning of her letter-writing campaign Virginia sealed her letters to Ballentine and signed them as “Varina.” This may have been in honor of Varina Anne Banks Howell Davis, wife of Jefferson Davis, President of the United States of America, however this is not known for sure.

After the end of the Civil War, James Ballentine returned home to Sippihaw. He and Virginia Arey eventually met, fell in love, and married in December 1867 in Cumberland County. For the rest of Virginia’s life James called her Varina. In 1880, James was appointed the first postmaster of the new post office. In honor of his wife, he named the post office Varina.
Over time, housing grew near the post office and James & Virginia’s Varina Mercantile general store. Varina Station was founded when two wooden railroad tracks crossed nearby. This “Varina” settlement was south of the Fuquay mineral spring. Virginia “Varian” Arey Ballentine (August 6, 1842 – May 28, 1888) died at the age of 45. James Ballentine (April 17, 1842 – February 5, 1917) never remarried but continued to be financially successful and 1910 he built. Ballentine-Spence House. It is said that this was the first house in the area to have electricity and indoor plumbing. This Queen Anne style home still exists today at 109 E. Spring Street, Fuquay Varina. It is a historic landmark and was added to the study list of the National Register in 1990.
Businessman John Mills in the late 1890s began offering “Moonlight Excursions” to Fuquay Mineral Springs. This Moonlight trip involved an overnight train ride in boxcars from Raleigh to Sippihaw. The city became a tourist attraction with all the surrounding hotels, restaurants, and dance halls.
In honor of its founding family, and for marketing purposes, Sippihaw was renamed in 1902 to “Fuquay Springs.” In 1909, Fuquay Springs was incorporated and in doing so, the new town’s boundaries included much of the neighboring settlement of Varina. Most importantly connecting the business district of Varina, and Cape Fear with the Northern Railway and the Norfolk South railway junction.

Even with this “attachment” Varina was still moving forward with the new Varina Union Station depot built in 1910 after the original Union Station was destroyed by fire. The new Varina post office was built around 1910 as well. In 1914, Varina Bank was founded, competing with Fuquay Bank. Tobacco warehouses were built in Varina near the railroad hub, and other businesses began to add to Varina’s business base.
Century. Due to the proximity, the residents of both cities had grown together economically and socially. The two cities merged to become Fuquay-Varina in 1963.
From the 1900s to the 1970s, Fuquay Springs and Varina became major business centers for southern Wake County as well as Harnett and Johnston counties. Tobacco and cotton to a lesser extent became the main commercial crops during this period. Time
