In the pre-Columbian era, the area was occupied by Sinagua people, who built their homes in the rocks of the Verde Valley mountains between 1100 and 1425. In 1583, Captain Antonio de Espejo and the Spanish conquistadors took possession of Verde. Valley.

In the 1860s, settlers began to immigrate to the Verde Valley to work in the mining industry. The US Army established a smaller post overlooking the farms that the settlers had established in West Clear Water. A post called Camp Lincoln was established, later renamed Camp Verde.

By 1879, many families had arrived in the area from the Midwestern United States. Among them was Charles D. Willard and his family. He named the area Cottonwood because a circle of six or six large cottonwoods grew about a quarter of a mile from the Verde River. Willard, who founded the town, is considered the “Father of Cottonwood.” The area became an agricultural site.
Cottonwood also has a commercial district that was added to the National Register of Historic Places (ref.#00000497) in 2000 as the Cottonwood Commercial Historic District. This includes the buildings and residences at 712-1124 N. Main Street.
However, Cottonwood does not have the authority to issue a demolition permit. Therefore, the owner of a property listed on the National Register of Historic Places or designated as historic by the Verde Historical Society may, if they so desire, demolish the historic property in question. Such was the fate of the 1875 Strahan House, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, reference #86002157. The historic house, located at 725 E. Main St., was demolished in 2007 and has since been removed from the NRHP site.

The Verde Historical Society is responsible for the preservation of Cottonwood’s historic artifacts and structures. The company is headquartered at 1 N. Willard Road in the old Clemceau High School.
