It is operated by the Division of State-Operated Health Care Facilities (DSOHF) within the North Carolina Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS). This hospital provides psychiatric and medical care to adults and adolescents in 25 counties in central North Carolina. CRH also serves children ages 11 and under from all 100 counties in North Carolina.
CRH is a psychiatry residency training site for both the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University. In addition to psychiatric residents, CRH offers internships for medical students, nurses, social workers, psychologists, chaplains, physical therapists, occupational therapists, recreational therapists and various other disciplines.
Mr. John Umstede, the brother of William B. Umstede, raised in Fort Butner, North Carolina, began a movement to better treat mental illness. The abandoned army hospital became the site of the John Umstede Hospital. It served 16 counties and its primary mission was to diagnose and treat individual psychiatric disorders at the facility, rehabilitating them to a better level of functioning and returning them to the community. Today the hospital serves additional services for government employees. Many types of patients can be treated at Umstead Central Regional Hospital now.
During 1947, the Butner School, known as “The Colony”, was opened. It was an old army camp and the first transfers from the Caswell Center took place in June 1948. Begun in 1955, construction began on the present site, which became known as the Murdoch Developmental Center in 1963. The Veterans Life Center (VLC) is a residential program designed to assist at-risk 21st century veterans for VA services. The goal is to provide each resident with the opportunity to thrive in civil society. By strengthening mental fitness and physical health, improving life skills and providing vocational training, staff will lead residents to opportunities and community life, averting all-too-frequent crises such as chronic homelessness, incarceration, death and premature death. VLC is the only state veterans’ organization to organize to facilitate the special tasks of planning, training and remembering to restore our suffering heroes to self-reliance.
Originally planned to be located in Building 71 on the John Umstead Hospital Complex, due to design and budgetary constraints, the center will be located on 9.5 acres on the south side of the complex. To further the state’s goals for the Center, the facility will be in close proximity to educational, medical and healthcare opportunities such as Vance Granville Community College-South Campus, R.J. Blackley Center, Central Regional Hospital, and the Durham VA Hospital. At full capacity, the facility will have 100-150 beds with full service amenities and office space for 30-plus staff.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held on Friday, October 27, 2017. WRAL covered the event which included dignitaries from NC & US law enforcement, local jurisdictions and the military. The facility is expected to open in 2019.
