Pgn Property Management Reviews
Pgn Property Management Reviews – As you round the corner from the parking lot to the clubhouse at Stoughton Acres on the northern edge of Butler, the ground rules are clearly spelled out on a beautifully crafted wooden bulletin board.
A lot of what’s written on those boards is pretty basic golf course stuff – keep carts off the tee and greens, no permits on the back nine, every golfer must have his own club, and so on.

But if you’re familiar with the world of recreational golf, there’s one important point that will stop you in your tracks.

NO ALCOHOL: If you consume any type of alcohol on this golf course, you will be asked to leave.
There are also warnings on the scorecards about using profanity and “damaging the lesson because of bad circles.”
Yes, this is a different kind of place. Or as our PGN photographer Mike Darnay told me after leaving the tchotchke-filled clubhouse: “It’s like Mayberry in there.”
No doubt. Andy Griffith is nowhere to be found, but Stoughton Acres is the most stubbornly old-school golf facility I’ve ever seen.

“This is the American dream,” Debbie Loughrey told our group as she pulled up to the seventh hitch of her ranger’s wheelchair.
Lowry is the daughter of the course’s founders, Van and Jeanne Smith, who bought the former dairy farm in the early 1960s and eventually opened all 18 holes by 1973.
Despite having no training or background in agronomy or golf management, the Smiths built a facility that, now in its sixth decade, still has a loyal customer base and a family-friendly atmosphere.
This makes sense considering the Smiths built their home on the property. As the scorecard reminds you, this is someone’s home.

“We grew up here,” said Lori, 51, who also helps run the front desk and snack bar. “Of course, my mother didn’t want us to listen to the lads swearing, and you know how people act when they’ve had too much to drink.
“It and their home were one and the same. What are you and your children allowed to do at home?”
Although Wang passed away two years ago at the age of 80, Jeanne still serves as a facilitator at Stoughton Acres. In fact, he was the one who let me in when he arrived.
And when I say that, I mean it literally. Jeanne wrote my name and green fees on the course paper notebook.

“They’ve done it the way they’ve done it since 1964, and it’s worked,” Lowry said. “So if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. My mom is very personal. … She has no interest in computerizing things.”
For all the games that have happened at Stoughton Acres, there’s one that’s really exciting. I paid $26 for 18 holes and a cart. Jeanne gently chastises me for not giving me $31, so she hands me a $5 bill from that wooden trunk.
It’s not one of the most impressive or complex models in the area, but it’s plenty of golf for your money. That’s part of the plan, as Laurie told me after the round, while also helping to build a steady stream of customers.
If the family runs the course and a few non-relative employees are loyal, the savings can be passed on to the golfers.

“Golf can be an expensive game to play,” Lowry said. “This is a small family business. Even though our employees are on the course, most of them become like family. They stay for a long time.”
The fairways are a little hairy and the greens are spotty, but Van Smith has done an admirable job using the natural patterns of the terrain. That old physics teacher in Seneca Valley built a really cool (sorry, I mean crap!) interesting golf course.
Stoughton Acres is 6,246 yards from the back tee and has a course rating of 68.5 over 72, but even the “easy” holes have some risk and reward. This place is scoreable and not boring.
In terms of handicaps, a few trees are definitely a little too close to the fairway — I’m looking at you on the 11th — and long hitters can find a few areas of the fairway entertainingly cramped. (Actually, I wasn’t laughing when I got out from under the tree on 15th Street.)

If you take this place for what it is, you’ll have a great time. The greens are well-protected with undulations and some strategic bunkering, and some of the par-4s are a bit tricky, but the par-3s and par-5s are fair checks.
It doubles as the course’s self-proclaimed signature hole, the par-5 13th. If you have the heart to carve a long putt from the downhill bottom above the pond, I would agree with this marker as a well-placed drive to the right allows you to bisect the shallow green.
Or, if you’re like me, you pull one to your left but still have enough space between the pines to make a second shot, keeping your chance at scoring.
As our group headed to the clubhouse, I couldn’t help but put myself in the shoes of the Smiths. Borrowed at will and stuck to build a golf course from scratch.
The Landlord Times
Adding a bit of randomness to the formula: Van was a direct descendant of the Stoughton family, a property only available to them. Otherwise, the area has been developed to become a residential building.
“My parents were walking by the house,” Lowry said. “My dad used to say, ‘Oh, that’s going to be a great golf course.’ He made a lot of mistakes … but he learned from them.”
He’s referring to course conditions more than anything else. More importantly, there’s real artistry to the layout, especially the back nine, which weaves through creeks, hollows and hills.
As for the true family atmosphere, it certainly doesn’t match the culture of brotherhood that has grown up in sports. But for those who play it clean and smart, Stoughton Acres is worth your time to experience the hacker haven.

For what it’s worth, there’s no rule against cursing under your breath. I don’t mean to do that.
“Sometimes we get new people and they don’t get it,” Lowry said. “It’s not for them, and that’s okay.”

A high above 50 will trigger the usual frenzy on December 11th.
For another thing, it was full enough to quench thirsty players in the twilight of Standard Time than a real starter kit was needed.
It felt wrong to take off the long-sleeve shirt, at least before opening, so I wore it to honor the fickle spirit of winter golf.
It usually has to do with your discomfort tolerance. For example, how cold can you get before your enjoyment drops to the “I’d rather be somewhere else” station?

That second principle was the key to my first trip to 3 Lakes the other day. While delivering a package a few weeks ago – Hello, Holiday Play – I was driving west on Salzburg Road and took a good look at the full length of April 10th.
As I craned my neck to get a quick feel for all the assets, a marquee sign in front of the parking lot caught my eye.
First of all, it’s a high (weather forecast!) standard to open. At this time of year, any day in the 30s without precipitation is when I start thinking about my options.
But there is no judging the good people of 3 Lakes. Maybe they decided it wasn’t worth their time and energy to host a few crazy people who would appear in their 40s and in the dark.

3 Lakes was the first one I saw last Friday when temperatures neared their peak. Formerly known as Alcoma Country Club, this year Pittsburgh Golf Now readers frequently mention it.
