Niels Nielsen Property Management – PORT ORCHARD — Members of the Rotary Club of Port Orchard gathered on Saturday, June 2 to dedicate the roundabout at the intersection of Bethel Avenue and Mile Hill Drive in honor of Niels Nielsen, a world-renowned Danish Rotarian.
To mark his significance, a new granite stone marker on which his name and Rotary affiliation were inscribed was placed.

In honor of Nielsen’s legacy, Rotary’s Mark Grimm said Denmark’s flag was raised at the roundabout’s inauguration to fly alongside the Port Orchard city flag and the flag of his adopted and beloved country, America. But the beautiful stone monument was the focus of the dedication ceremony.

“The partnership between the Port Orchard Rotary and the City of Port Orchard has resulted in the development of exceptional functionality for the enjoyment of South Kitsap residents,” Grimm said.
Grimm said Nielsen had been instrumental in helping many Rotary clubs get started – both in Port Orchard and Bremerton – and also around the world. Nielsen, known to many as the “Great Dane” due to his Danish heritage, died in 2010. Port Orchard City Council named the roundabout in his honor the following year.
Born in Kalundborg, Denmark in 1932 and raised in Copenhagen, Nielsen was a member of the Danish World War II resistance movement before he was a teenager. He first emigrated to Canada, then later to the United States when he was in his twenties. Nielsen and his wife Margie then moved from Los Angeles to Aberdeen, Washington and then to Kitsap County, where he became CEO and general manager of Bremerton’s Olympic Savings in 1972.
He left the bank in 1976 and ran his own property and property management company in Bremerton, Niels G. Nielsen Services, now run by his son Erik.

Grimm said Nielsen then extended his Rotary Club service to an international stage, traveling to St. Petersburg, Russia. And in Vietnam, he led the “Kids First” mission to help young Vietnamese who had been injured by stray artillery shells during the Vietnam War.
“He was there so often in contact with the children and did such a good job,” said Paul, Nielsen’s son.
It should come as no surprise that his father is the personification of a “sociable person”. He said his father – whom he called a “character” – enjoyed meeting, talking to and befriending anyone who reciprocated him.
“He was rambunctious, cheerful, loud, flamboyant and about as energetic as he could get,” Paul Nielsen said. “He was a man of the world who respected all people of all cultures and was very interested in learning more about any culture he was unfamiliar with.”

And just as important, his son said, Niels was interested in helping those who wanted to improve their condition. And the more colorful they were, the better.
He said that as Rotary’s program coordinator, Niels was legendary for hosting guests at the organization’s meetings, which gave “shock value” to the proceedings: he once invited a guest – a member of the mafia – who was then “silent”. Another time he brought in a criminal – a bank robber the elder Nielsen had hired at his bank. Then there was the prostitute leading an initiative to decriminalize the world’s oldest profession.
That a stretch of road bears his name, added the son, would have tickled the bon vivant a great deal. He often alluded to a road in North Kitsap – Nels Nelson Road – and said he was delighted that it matched his name so closely.
“Dad would be extremely honored to know the roundabout was named in his memory and to see the piece of granite every time he passes,” Paul said.

The dedication ended on a high note when Paul led the group in a traditional Danish toast – a special honor his father “was particularly good at”, his son said.

Financial details of the deal, which would see Corsair acquire a majority stake in Zedrea from their current owners – the Nielsen and Sarikhani families – have not been disclosed, nor has the exact size of the majority stake been revealed.
The deal, which remains tentative pending full regulatory approval, is expected to close next year, the company said.
