Glenn Tanaka, also known as Farmer Tanaka, graduated from Cal Poly Pomona with a degree in Agricultural Business. Upon graduating in 1978, he immediately took over the family’s strawberry and tomato wholesale farm, which shipped throughout the country. After eight years of expansion, they suffered successive years of huge losses that forced the family farm to cut costs and regroup. After another twelve years of struggle, they decided to completely re-engineer their operation from a wholesale mono-crop farm to a certified organic multi-crop farm with direct retail and education farm. Today, along with his wife Shirley and son Kenny, Tanaka Farms is thriving and practicing responsible farming practices in the heart of Irvine. Tanaka Farms grows over 60 different crops throughout the year. They sell these crops through their farm and through the CSA program, which has 700 members.
