A. G. Kawamura is a third generation urban farmer from California. He is the former Secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture (2003-2010). As Co-Chair of Solutions From the Land, he has worked to advance innovative strategies for sustainable agricultural systems, including the creation of the North American Alliance for Climate-Smart Agriculture. He serves on several boards and committees, including: the Board of Agriculture and Natural Resources (BANR), the policy arm of the Board of Natural Resources of the National Academy of Sciences; member of the National Executive Committee 25×25; Member of the Agricultural Advisory Committee of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs and the Agree Initiative; External Advisory Board of the UC Davis Institute for Sustainable Agricultural Development. He is a former chairman and current board member of the Western Growers Association. Locally, he is the founding chairman of Urban Farming Solutions (formerly Orange County Harvest) and has been dedicated to ending hunger in Southern California for over 30 years, working with innovative ways to provide fresh food to local food banks. Through his company Orange County Produce, LLC, he is building an immersive 100-acre interactive 21st century agricultural exhibit at the Orange County Grand Park in Irvine, California.

Tim Alderson is the Executive Director of Seeds of Hope, a food justice ministry for the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles that grows and distributes food to more than 100 needy communities in six Southern California counties. His life in agriculture includes nearly 20 years as CEO of AgriGator, Inc., a multinational soil fertilizer manufacturer, and on numerous industry boards, including the board of directors of the National Agricultural Marketing Association. He was the founding chairman of the California School Garden Network and was appointed by two governors of California to the board of the school’s agriculture and nutrition program, of which he is currently president. He was also appointed to the School Garden Advisory Committee of the California Department of Education and currently serves on the Los Angeles Food Policy Board’s Urban Agriculture Strategy Group. Tim lives in Pasadena, California, where he served as chairman of the City Recreation and Parks Commission and the Mayor’s Housing Task Force.

Mr. Nilsson has extensive international experience in deal making and international business structures in Latin America, Asia and Europe. He has developed company-wide environmental and business compliance programs coupled with an integrated management system committed to sustainability. He has advised businesses on general business matters, mergers and acquisitions, and international business structures and transactions. Former General Counsel of Nueva Holding, Inc. (GrupoNueva, Masisa and Amanco) and Dole Food Company, Inc., and former board member of Masisa, S.A., Terranova, S.A., Pascual Hermanos, S.A. and Western Growers Association, and current director of Agricultural Waste Solutions, Inc. and Oak Creek Company. As general counsel for all food businesses and vice president of international legal and regulatory affairs for Dole Food Company, Inc. Mr. Nilsson has led legal and government programs in the United States and internationally for one of the world’s largest food companies.
Harald Herrmann was recently named executive chairman of the newly formed One Table restaurant chain, which includes Tocaya and Tender Greens.
Accustomed to the restaurant business in high school when he worked as a part-time dishwasher, Harald became fascinated with the business as he moved into increasingly responsible positions in the hotel and restaurant business.
In 1995, Harald was invited to help launch the Yard House flagship restaurant, which opened in Long Beach, California in 1996. The Yard House quickly grew into one of Southern California’s most successful independent restaurants, and Harald, as an appointed partner, began leading the Yard House’s development and expansion into new markets. After being partnered with private equity firm TSG Consumer Partners in 2007, Yard House was named president and CEO until the acquisition of Darden in 2012. Harald was subsequently named President of Darden’s Specialty Restaurant Group in 2014, which includes The Capital Grille, Seasons 52, Eddie V’s Restaurants, Bahama Breeze and Yard House. Harald and his family returned to California, where he ran Mendocino Farms, a holding company for TPG Capital, from 2017 to 2019 as CEO. In 2019, Harald followed his heart and long-standing personal goal to lead a non-profit organization and supported Second Harvest Food Bank as CEO until July of this year.

Harald is currently Chairman of the Board of Directors of Round It Up America, a nonprofit fundraising platform he co-founded in 2009. Harald served on the board of directors of the California Restaurant Association from 2003 to 2010 and was chairman in 2011. He was also founding chairman of the California Susan G. Komen Association for the Cure Pink Tie Ball.
Harald co-authored and published several children’s books in 2001, which he began donating to Miller Children’s Hospital in Long Beach in support of children treated at the hospital, as well as children and families affected by cancer and the loss of a family member due to cancer.
Mr. Larson has over 40 years of experience in the green industry serving a variety of clients in the private and public sectors. He is the former manager of the Agriculture and Landscape Department of the Great Park. During the planning process for the first phase of the Great Park, Mr. Larson established an urban agricultural element that consisted of a 104-acre organic farm, an educational center called the Farm + Food Lab, a citrus grove called Giving Grove, farmers. market, relocation of Incredible Edible Park (partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank) to the Great Park, and support for a research farm established on vacant land in the Great Park. The city’s agricultural program served over 240,000 people a year. It has been recognized as the largest urban agricultural enterprise in a public park in the country. It was visited by congressional government officials and international dignitaries seeking information and support on how to implement similar urban agricultural programs in other urban areas in the United States and other countries. Recruiting volunteers for the city’s Great Park Agricultural Program has been a significant accomplishment for Mr. Larson. Volunteer involvement in urban agricultural operations and programs has helped reduce overall operating and program costs by 40%. Mr. Larson is committed to helping planners in the municipal and private sectors design and implement urban agricultural programs and community-focused projects.
Edward Ito is a third generation farmer from Orange County, California. He has a long and extensive experience in agriculture. He maintains close ties with Naturipe Berry Growers, one of the largest strawberry suppliers on the West Coast. His family was a mainstay at Naturipe Berry Growers as the oldest active members of the grower owned cooperative. Along with his family farming business, Edward was a longtime member of the Orange County Farm Bureau. He has also been instrumental in developing innovative ways to grow hydroponic strawberries for Naturipe Berry Growers. Building on previous experience, Edward currently works as SFUA Production Manager at Giving Farm at Westminster High School and has also assisted in moving and maintaining hydroponic fruit and vegetable systems for Incredible Edible Farm.

Glenn Tanaka, also known as Farmer Tanaka, graduated from Cal Poly Pomona with a degree in Agricultural Business. Upon graduating in 1978, he immediately took over the family’s strawberry and tomato wholesale farm, which shipped throughout the country. After eight years of expansion, they suffered successive years of huge losses that forced the family farm to cut costs and regroup. After another twelve years of struggle, they decided to completely re-engineer their operation from a wholesale mono-crop farm to a certified organic multi-crop farm with direct retail and education farm. Today, along with his wife Shirley and son Kenny, Tanaka Farms is thriving and practicing responsible farming practices in the heart of Irvine. Tanaka Farms grows over 60 different crops throughout the year. They sell these crops through their farm and through the CSA program, which has 700 members. In addition to producing produce, Tanaka Farms educates 40,000 schoolchildren on farm tours and entertains another 100,000 families each year with their farm activities.
Lauren is a Infant Nutrition Consultant and former Food and Nutrition Administrator for the Huntington Beach Union High School District serving over a million meals a year. Lauren and her team increased their fresh food consumption by 150% by promoting school meals and cafe farm in schools. She has been instrumental in obtaining over $5 million in grants for food and nutrition education, Farm to Café, and others. She has a passion for urban farms, as she was introduced to the turkey in her youth.
