Following the ribbon cutting, CRDA awarded JFS a three-year grant of $685,000 to support outpatient mental health counseling services for Atlantic City residents in need.
JFS representatives said in a release that the past two years have been challenging for everyone in their own way. In today’s climate, demand for the therapy has increased as health care workers are traumatized by caring for Covid-19 patients, political dissent is on edge, and families and marriages are suffering. Out-of-school or long-term virtual learning has created clear learning deficits with unintended consequences for children’s development and stress for their mental health. More people of color are seeking help — especially when racial injustice remains at the forefront. Burnout and compassion fatigue are always present.
JFS is in overdrive to keep up with requests for counseling and the high demand for qualified therapists. Despite providing 9,003 therapy sessions last year, JFS, with providers across the country, has long waiting lists. The demands are high and the stakes are high.
“CRDA is proud to support Jewish Family Service’s efforts in addressing mental health in Atlantic City and surrounding areas,” said CRDA Executive Director Sean Pattwell. “The multi-year grant will fund much-needed health services, especially given the many unmet needs during a pandemic.”
Resettlement & Integration Services
In the initial year, JFS will partner with dedicated leaders at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino and training programs to serve youth living in Atlantic City and seeking mental health support, as well as property employees. In the years ahead, JFS will explore additional partnerships that will promote the health, wellness and productivity of Atlantic City residents. In addition, CRDA funding will provide outpatient counseling to 163 children, adolescents, adults, families and seniors in Atlantic City.
“Mental health treatment is essential for many individuals. Last year alone, JFS provided its outpatient counseling services to 98 Atlantic City residents. Programs included youth intervention, functional family therapy and case management services,” said JFS CEO Andrea Steinberg. “With CRDA funding, along with the Hard Rock partnership, JFS will be able to continue to help residents facing mental health challenges.”
JFS has dozens of highly qualified therapists and continues to offer counseling hours and tele-health sessions to keep up with demand. Currently, JFS provides individual therapy in Atlantic City, Margate and Cape May Court House office locations.
Anyone needing counseling is asked to make an appointment by calling the JFS Intake Center at 609-822-1108. 1.
