Created by Living Lens of renowned San Francisco artists, Wishing Well was originally installed at the Genesis Center in 2012. Due to safety concerns related to concentrated reflected sunlight, the piece was removed. Since then, the City has worked with specialized engineers to mitigate the risks.
Prior to installation, a non-reflective coating is applied to the interior of the sculpture to eliminate the possibility of concentrating sunlight reflecting off the sculpture’s interior curves. Samples of this non-reflective coating have been successfully tested in a controlled lab environment.

Additionally, the statue’s new position and orientation greatly reduces sunlight reflection for nearby drivers and pedestrians. By placing the wishing well at a 20-degree angle to the west-east, the idol will receive the least amount of sunlight. Sunlight exposure will be further reduced with the sculpture next to a high-rise apartment building.
“Relocating public artwork requires significant planning and relationship building,” said Jennifer Thompson, Manager of Arts and Culture at the City of Calgary. “This partnership with JEMM Properties is a great example of our new direction for public art and paves the way for further collaborations with our local private sector.”
“It’s been a true collaboration with the City and the community and together we’ve found an achievable way to bring this incredible sculpture out of storage,” said Aidan Lindenbach, Principal, Land, Planning and Development, JEMM Properties. “During our discussions with The City there were open minds all around the table and that positivity led us to an exciting re-homing strategy that will be well received by Calgarians. It’s a comeback story of sorts — a win for the environment and a win for the community, and we’re happy to lend a hand by providing a safe and appropriate space.”
Ahead of the installation, the city is working with a local IT company to upgrade the interactive multimedia component that gives the statue its name and allows visitors to send a text message to the Wishing Well, which turns into lights and sounds. . As each letter of the alphabet is assigned a different sound, each unique text message (ie hello wishing well) produces a different light and sound pattern.
