Victorville is located in San Bernardino County in the high desert of Southern California in the southeastern part of the Mojave Desert. Victorville’s first residents appeared in 1858 when Aaron Lane built a way station known as Lane’s Crossing. It was built to serve people traveling anywhere in San Bernardino and the Mojave Desert. In 1885, a telegraph station was built near the Victor Railroad in what is now Old Town Victorville. The small town that developed around that telegraph station was named Victor. This caused confusion among post offices because there was already a town in Colorado called Victor. Because of this, the name was changed to Victorville in 1901. In 1941 Victorville Army Airfield was built and later renamed George Air Force Base. This military base existed until 1992, when it was permanently closed due to the discovery of some highly toxic chemicals. Victorville was incorporated in 1962 and serves as the Mojave Desert branch of San Bernardino County government.
