Four years ago, Natalie Hundt moved into a high-rise in a low-income neighborhood and soon discovered there was a major problem, but she didn’t know how to get building management to fix the problem.

“Every day the elevator smells like urine,” said Hundt, 33, a mother of two young children. “We tried to talk to the property managers, but nothing seemed to happen.”

Then one day, a representative from the activist group ACORN came knocking on her door.
“They were going door-to-door asking their neighbors what problems they were having, so I told them about the elevator,” he said.
Hundt and other building residents worked with ACORN to try to get building officials to resolve the issue. When the property manager did not respond, the residents staged a demonstration.
“Suddenly a property manager was found and they held a meeting to listen to us and understand that the tenants have the right to clean the stairwells and elevator cameras and fulfill the work orders,” Hundt said.

A tenant association was formed and several investments were made in the building, including new elevators. The property management company also agreed to install video cameras in the elevators.
“It was an uphill battle, but we haven’t had anyone pee in the elevator since,” says Hundt, when he moved out, despite the building’s condition. Because its revenue and many other buildings have similar problems.
“Moving was not the solution for me, and it is for many renters in the city,” Hundt said.
This experience gave him the belief that individuals can make a difference. She connected with the organization and began lobbying Queen’s Park on issues related to low-income neighborhoods and families, and helping local candidates in elections.

In 2008, Hundt ran for the NDP in the Scarborough Center seat against longtime Liberal MP John Cannis. He finished third with 5,801 votes, about 16 percent of the total. Cannis won by nearly 18,000 votes, but Hundt said the experience was rewarding and he learned a lot.
“Before I got involved in public affairs, I never dreamed of it,” he said. “We need to take advantage of the opportunities we have – apathy is our biggest problem.”
This fall, he is campaign manager for Southwest Scarborough City Council candidate Robert Spencer.
“I became really interested in why you should focus on the democratic process. There’s a lot of apathy out there and we need to look at why people aren’t interested in voting — there’s strength in numbers,” he said. “When you think about the consequences of not voting, that’s enough to make me vote.”

Renters make up about 50 per cent of Toronto’s population, but many don’t vote, Hundt said, adding that it’s important to see what power renters have when it comes to elections.
“If you don’t vote, you’re still voting in the sense of “Do what you want.'” he said.
ACORN called for increased access to polling stations for high-rise residents. In July, they asked the precinct committee to install polling booths in all buildings with 100 or more units.
While some of the mayoral candidates have listed tenant issues, such as addressing the bed bug, high-rise inspections and tenants paying rent taxes as part of their campaign platforms, Hundt said voters need to test their promises. carefully, this is also part of the voting process.

Prior to joining Airbus Helicopters in 2016, Thomas was Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President of Arianespace, based in Evry, France.
Thomas began his career at Airbus in 1998 as a controller at Panavia Tornado Management, then moved to EADS headquarters (now Airbus) in 2000 as a controller. In 2004, he joined Astrium (now part of Airbus Defense and Space) in the Aerospace business as Vice President of Controlling. After that, he served as Vice President of Finance and Control for Navigation Satellites from 2007 to 2011, and then as Vice President of Finance and Control for Earth Observation, Science and Navigation Satellites from 2011 to 2014.
Thomas holds a Diploma in Business Economics from the Cooperative State University of Stuttgart, Germany, and an Executive MBA from IMD, Switzerland.
