Hallman’s Chevrolet was a longtime auto dealership in Rochester, the last remaining downtown dealership, and, at one point, one of the top Chevy dealerships in the country.

Its Art Deco showroom, featuring an enormous clock, became an enduring landmark of the city. After more than half a century in business, Hallman’s closed and its site on posh East Avenue sat vacant for years before the city of Rochester purchased the property.

Redevelopment of the site led to housing in the city centre. The dedicated showroom has been preserved and has been home to a popular coffee shop for years. And although Hallman’s Chevrolet has moved to Rochester over the years, another Hallman’s Chevrolet operated by family members is still not far from here.

Maynard W. Hallman started the business during the Great Depression. The Rochester native had been in the auto business since the 1920s, starting with a Cadillac dealership called Mabbett Motors.

By 1934, Hallman had become associated with a man named Harry Fincher, an Old Mobile and Chevy dealer on Union Street. Two years later, Fincher set up a separate Chevy dealership at 200 East Avenue and put Hallman in charge. The business was known as Central Chevrolet until it was renamed Holmans Chevrolet.

Maynard Hallman quickly put his stamp on the place, as noted in a 1984 Upstate magazine article. The original building was “a simple brick and glass affair that didn’t deserve a second glance,” the story said. “Maynard Hallman changed all that in 1937, spending $60,000 to refinish the facade of the central Chevrolet, with arched plate-glass windows, black glass facings and fluted, polished aluminum trim that remain prominent today.” Hallman also added neon lighting and a clock — with letters spelling out “Super Service” instead of numbers — as part of the remodeling, as well as interior touches like chandeliers and a fireplace.

Upstate Story calls the building “a stunning tribute to Art Deco design.” Over the years, Hallman bought and sold many cars to many people in the Rochester area, even when times were tough. A 1944 classified ad for “Buicks – 1936-1937-1938-1939s – urgently needed; war workers waiting. Price nothing.”

Years later, Hallman said his dealership sold about 3,500 new cars and trucks and 1,000 used vehicles each year. The dealership won General Motors’ “Service Supremacy Award” 10 years in a row, and Holmans was the top Chevy dealer in Western New York and one of the top 100 Chevy dealerships in the United States.
