Greener pastures await for the vacant property in Tatamy, home to the Northampton Farm Bureau Cooperative Association retail store that closed last summer under increasing competition from wholesalers.

This year, the property at 300 Bushkill St. will become the corporate headquarters of Gerhart, a longtime industrial services provider that will move two locations, including its home base in Hanover Township, Lehigh County, to the Tatami space.

President and CEO Gerhart Stuart Cattell, whose Cattell Property Management LLC bought the property last month for $1.12 million, said he had been looking for a corporate headquarters for about three years when he came across the Tatami property and “instantly fell in love” with its history. .
He noted the building’s original hardwood floors and open, wooden, 19-foot-tall beamed ceilings. But still, some cultivation – so to speak – will be needed.
Cattell said the company will retrofit the building with insulation above the roof to maintain the open rafter look, in addition to installing electrical, window, plumbing and HVAC systems.
In the 12,500-square-foot main building, Cattell plans to build about 7,500 square feet of office space. Gerhart is leasing 8,400 square feet at 754 Roble Road in Lehigh Valley Industrial Park III, a space that has already been viewed by several potential tenants, said Lisa Pektor, president of building owner PennCap Properties.

Gerhart also has a small workshop on Godfrey Street in Allentown, an operation that will move into a roughly 8,000-square-foot steel building behind the main office on the Tatami property.
Cattell said Gerhart’s 28 employees are expected to move to the new location, which will house the company’s administration; regional industrial services group; mechanical, electrical and software engineering group; and a panel workshop and training center. Cattell hopes to move into the “much-needed new headquarters” by September.
“Tatamy is a beautiful little town located close to everything in the valley,” Cattell said in an email. “We hope our employees will take advantage of the Tatami trail that winds through the property and take advantage of the beautiful nature that surrounds us.”
Founded in 1929 as an industrial-scale distributor in New Jersey, the company is growing at a steady pace. Diversifying its offerings and adding a systems and controls division 25 years ago, Cattell said, allowed Gerhart to grow into the fully integrated industrial services provider it is today. Specializing in weighing and process measurement, Gerhart lists products on its website that include cargo scales, plant scales and laboratory scales.
