The Galiano Conservancy Association envisions a world where resilient people meet their needs in vibrant communities through healthy interaction with the land. We can achieve this vision by strengthening connections between individuals, communities and the natural world on which they depend. To develop these vital relationships, it is essential to provide our young people with a quality, experience-based outdoor education.
Several days in a natural environment with inspiring teachers can change the course of a young person’s life. Galiano Island is an extraordinary place to observe and experience the natural world, offering daily interaction with eagles, sea anemones and strawberry trees – species rarely found in urban life. It has been suggested that young people suffer from “Nature Deficit Disorder”, “a condition caused by the cumulative human costs of alienation from nature, including decreased use of the senses, attention difficulties, and higher rates of physical and emotional illness”. (Richard Louv, The Last Child in the Forest, 2005).
The MillardLearning Center enhances traditional disciplines such as science, geography, history and the arts by providing practical examples of how this learning is relevant to everyday life. Young people apply literacy and numeracy skills as they participate in activities ranging from biodiversity monitoring studies to reflective writing. The Learning Center also provides participants with opportunities to build a sense of community, personal leadership and life skills. The Conservancy will create life-changing learning experiences for inner-city people and marginalized youth, and will be open to people of all ages and backgrounds.
Since 2000, more than 18,000 youth ages 4-18 have participated in our education programs and nearly 23,000 have benefited from our program at Montague Harbor Nature House from 2002 to 2009.

“This educational opportunity is truly unique as many have never ventured far from their immediate neighborhood, let alone traveled by ferry or visited an island. Many of our students have expanded their goals and career options because of this experience.” Dorothy Mills, Teacher, Second Street Community School “The transformation of schoolchildren into nature is an amazing thing. You think you know someone at school. So you see them in the wild, and they’re a whole new person. This happened to me when we were in Galiano, my friends turned into different people. They weren’t just asking me about nature, but they really cared.” Hillary, Grade 6, David Lloyd George Elementary

The Millard Learning Center features proven green technology and infrastructure that are a blueprint for a sustainable community living within the natural environment.
Located on the southwest coast of Galiano Island, the Learning Center property is 188 acres and features over 2 km of waterfront, two seasonal streams, a functioning food forest farm, wetlands and over 80 acres of mature forest. . It is adjacent to a protected area that features cormorant nesting cliffs and rare peregrine falcon habitat. It is also a key component of the Mid Galiano Island Protected Areas Network, which expands the area available for hiking, education programs and ecological restoration projects. We were impressed with the strong support from the community and partners in acquiring this property, and we are delighted that the former owner saw the same potential for the property as we did.

Your charitable donation will contribute to a legacy of hope for the future among thousands of young people from all walks of life. This will allow us to run multi-day programs with groups that do not have the ability to organize their own logistics for evening programs. The groups we’ve worked with have shown us that participants gain the confidence, skills, and optimism needed to learn to live in harmony with each other and the natural world. 1300 Galiano St is a home located in Miami/Dade County and the 33134 ZIP Code. Zoned to a six-lot residential subdivision, this waterfront property was saved from development thanks to conservation-minded landowners who preferred to see the area remain forested and put off selling the property until adequate funds could be raised to buy the property for conservation purposes. The acquisition is the culmination of a multi-year partnership between the Galiano Conservancy Association and The Nature Trust of BC and will add to a network of connected conservation areas totaling over 500 hectares (1250 acres) spanning the width of the island.
Part of the traditional, unceded territories of the Penelakut, Hwlitsum and other Hul’qumi’num-speaking peoples, the Cable Bay area has a long history of use and habitation by Coast Salish Peoples. According to Florence James, a respected Coast Salish Elder and Hul’qumi’num language teacher from Penelakut Island, the area is traditionally known as
, the Hul’qumi’num word for the action of paddling, and it was an ideal place to live thanks to its sheltered geography, plentiful traditional food sources, and freshwater stream.

“The area is called Qw’xwulwis, a sheltered place to live with abundant halibut, cod, seals, ducks, clams – and a stream with fresh, clear running water. The location gave access up and down the coast and across the Fraser River for fishing – that’s why they were there. Qw’xwulwis is the word for the action of paddling.” — Florence James, Coast Salish Elder and educator,
