COEUR d’ALENE — It’s a good thing artist Bryan K. Ross didn’t literally break the mold after completing the original moose for the 2004 “No Moose Left Behind” project.

It’s been 14 years since a successful and colorful elk public art campaign netted several hundred thousand dollars for the Extras to Create Excellence in Learning (EXCEL) Foundation, which awards grants to teachers and counselors in the Coeur d’Alene school district to provide their own. students with innovative and creative classroom projects. It was named after the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, which emphasized supporting disadvantaged students.
On Saturday, the last life-size fiberglass moose will be auctioned off during the Big Event: An Evening of Excellence, continuing the tradition of ensuring that no children – and no moose – are left behind.
“There was a rumor that we had a moose and we visited with Bryan Ross,” EXCELIN President Katie Morrisroe said Tuesday. “He still had the mold and casting. We got to make a new moose just for this.”
Originally, 26 of these large ungulates and 39 “mini moose” were created for the campaign and sold to individuals and businesses during the gala auction. Local artists have creatively and brilliantly decorated the moose, and a few can still be seen around town on places like downtown rooftops, Century 21 outside Beutler and Associates on Northwest Boulevard and the Kootenai Health campus.

The 2018 deer hasn’t been decorated yet, so the winner will work with a local artist to give this next generation deer its painted personality. An empty mini moose is also going up for auction to support the organization.
Since the EXCEL Foundation was founded more than 30 years ago, it has awarded more than 1,100 grants and raised about $1.9 million, Morrisroe said.
“This year we funded 64 grants totaling $173,956.28,” Morrisroe said. “It’s just a great organization. It’s great to see community support for local education.”
The Big Event is the hallmark of EXCEL’s year, during which last year’s grant recipients are recognized and the current year’s grants are awarded.

The evening lasts from 17:00 to 23:00. at the Best Western Plus Coeur d’Alene Inn, and there will be a social hour, dinner, raffles and auctions.
