I have two. I have three. I don’t go to many Mexican restaurants, because my mom cooks enough. I used to wander over to Sal’s south of Five Points on Oxnard Boulevard. Word on the street is that after he passed away, his family closed the shop. I like Sal and the personal touch. Greet all customers personally when they walk into his establishment.
Around the time of his death, Cabo opened on the other side of Five Points. It is affordable, the menu has many offerings, original-tasting food and generous portions. I really enjoyed eating there during lunch. The majority of clients consistently seem satisfied and there is a good atmosphere in the place.
It’s nice to walk into Cabo and see people making corn tortillas, hand-made. It tastes good when you order fish tacos from the lunch menu. I also like the chicken enchiladas (con chile verde) with a side of rice and frijolitos. Another delicious lunch dish is shrimp enchiladas. I’ve been a few times and the shrimp are always tasty and fresh.

If you have the desire and happen to wander through a la cantina, I recommend “una casuela.” It is quite a tasty concoction of various alcoholic offerings in a small Mexican stew-pan or cup.
Taqueria el Tapatio No. 2 (north corner of Ventura Road and Fifth St.). The carne asada burritos are delicious and filling. The cook takes time to prepare the “burros” and wrap them properly. The ingredients used inside make it a great lunch or evening experience. (I think the same can be said for all their burritos). Another favorite burrito is “al pastor”, spicy pork. Also recommended are the “Super Nachos” and the shrimp cocktail. On a nice day, one can enjoy the offerings while sitting outside on the patio area and watch the planes come in for landings at the Oxnard Airport.
By far my favorite sushi restaurant in Oxnard (even though it’s actually located in Port Hueneme). The owner of the restaurant, Chef Hanada, uses traditional Tokyo sushi traditions (re:, don’t ask for more wasabi!). He drives to the Los Angeles Fish Market every day to pick the catch he brings back to the restaurant. One can appreciate their efforts when visiting the place, because the sushi always tastes of the sea and is delicious. Octopus, uni, handroll, yellow tail, toro, etc. never disappoint. If you love sushi but haven’t visited Chef Hanada, you should.
As a native of Oxnard, I have had the opportunity to travel to Italy once, New York City four times and Chicago several times. Needless to say, the pizza at this place is amazing. It is at times difficult to be satisfied with good pizza in Oxnard if one has the original New York-style in Manhattan or deep-dish Chicago pizza. However, I have two pizza places in town that I love the most: BJ Restaurant & Brew-house (Esplanade Drive) and Topper.

When I visit BJ’s, I do it during Happy Hour. I do it because that way, the restaurant’s mini-pizza is half the price. I recommend BJ’s Favorite (work); BJ’s Classic Combo (pepperoni, sausage and mushrooms); or Babi Manis (pineapple, seasoned tomato and oven-roasted ham). Combined with one of the house beers from the brewery in sight, I seemed to leave after the meal quite satisfied.

I haven’t eaten at a restaurant in a while, but again, when we as a family want pizza, we ask for Topper on the horn.
