LyondellBasell was formed in December 2007 through the $12.7 billion acquisition of Lyondell Chemical Company by Basell Polyolefins.
Lyondellbasell Faces At Least 2 Lawsuits Over Deadly La Porte Plant Leak
Since its founding in 1985 from facilities owned by Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO), the company grew through share exchanges with Occidtal Chemicals and Millnium Chemicals in 1997, which formed Equistar Chemicals, in which each was a partner. Lyondell bought back the outstanding shares of each of its partners to gain full control of Equistar, which is a subsidiary of Lyondell. Lyondell acquired ARCO Chemical in 1998 for $5.6 billion, including ARCO’s 82.2% interest in tires. In 2004, Lyondell acquired Millium Chemicals in a stock exchange deal for $2.3 billion. In August 2006, Lyondell acquired Citgo’s stake in the Lyondell-Citgo refinery for $2.1 billion and took over Houston Refining.
Chemical manufacturer Basell Polyolefins acquired Lyondell in December 2007, creating a new company, LyondellBasell Industries AF S.C.A., one of the largest chemical companies in the world at the time. It was owned by Access Industries, a private industrial group headquartered in the US. LyondellBasell is the third largest independent chemical manufacturer in the world with headquarters in Houston and Rotterdam.
LyondellBasell’s United States unit filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January 2009 and emerged from bankruptcy in April 2010.
In 2014, LyondellBasell announced the installation of two large cracker furnaces at its Channelview facility, and the following year, the company announced it would double production capacity at its Bayport Underwood facility.

In June 2016, LyondellBasell announced the opening of a plant in Northern China. It was the third facility for LyondellBasell to operate in China, after Guangzhou and Suzhou.
In September 2016, LyondellBasell announced that it would build a $700 million polyethylene plant at the La Porte Manufacturing Complex on the Houston Ship Canal that would produce 1.1 billion pounds of polyethylene annually.
In January 2017, the company completed an expansion of its Corpus Christi ethanol plant. The plant’s capacity was increased by 50 percent to produce 2.5 billion pounds a year.
That same year, Hurricane Harvey hit the United States and affected the company’s operations on the Texas Gulf Coast. The Houston Ship Channel was temporarily closed, preventing oil tankers from reaching the refineries. The La Porte facility was damaged but was restored in late October.

In December 2017, LyondellBasell partnered with Suez, a French water and waste management company, in the first joint project between a major plastics and chemicals company and a resource management company.
LyondellBasell and Odebrecht entered into exclusive negotiations for LYB to acquire control of Braskem in June 2018, but did not complete the acquisition.
In July 2018, LyondellBasell announced a partnership with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany to advance the chemical recycling of plastic materials and contribute to global efforts towards a circular economy and plastic waste recycling needs. The goal of the project is to develop a new catalyst and process technology for breaking down post-consumer plastic waste, such as packaging, into monomers for reuse in polymerization processes.
That same month, construction began on the world’s largest propyl oxide and tertiary butyl alcohol plant in Channelview, Texas. The plant is estimated to produce 1 billion pounds of propyl oxide and 2.2 billion pounds of tertiary butyl alcohol annually. LyondellBasell will export most of its products through the Houston Ship Channel.

LyondellBasell also announced in September that it has launched a major investment project in Maasvlakte-Rotterdam, the Netherlands, with its joint venture partner Covestro. LyondellBasell annually hosts the World Day of Caring, during which company employees participate in community projects in 20 countries.
In 2016, LyondellBasell raised $2.65 million at its 23 sites for Victoria County United Way in Texas.
At the time, it was the largest donation the organization had received. The following year, the company donated $54,424 to the Victoria County United Way to support 18 partner agencies in the surrounding area.
