In Depoe Bay, Ore., A Family Weekend Getaway Means Relaxing Walks, Pizza And Play Structures
The name Boiler Bay comes from the ship’s boiler you can see at low tide on the beach here. J. Marhoffer’s plane exploded in 1910, but his boiler survived the disaster. This bay is also a great place to watch the spectacular waves and birds. Bring your binoculars and you might spot an albatross, pelican, loon, shearwater, or jaeger. Gray whales also live here and migrate to the coast.
This day use area is about 3 miles north of Depoe Bay. It has ample parking, picnic tables and restrooms, so bring a lunch and check it out. There is also an inland area where you can see indigenous trees along a flowing stream that empties into the Pacific Ocean.
You will likely see bald eagles nesting, agates on the beach at low tide, and lots of driftwood, shells, and sand. It’s a great place to walk your dog or watch birds. Children can explore ponds full of aquatic life.
This small bay just half a mile from Depoe Bay was used by bootleggers during prohibition to ship their banned booty ashore. Today, it is a protected part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge, home to marine mammals, seabirds, and birds of prey.

If you want to get the best view of the cabin, head to the Rocky Creek State Scenic Viewpoint. You’ll find picnic tables and unobstructed views perfect for whale watching or spotting nesting birds, sea lions, or harbor seals.
This incredible, little-known drive covers a three-mile section of the old Coast Highway. It starts two miles south of Depoe Bay on Rocky Creek Wayside and takes you past Cape Foulweather, Otter Rock, and Devil’s Punchbowl; they are all worth a visit.
This challenging road traverses steep cliffs with drops of over 600 feet in some places. One area is one way since the 1990s. However, it is a big event especially when you get to Cape Foulweather where you can see for almost 40 miles in clear weather. The geology and wildlife make photography a must as well. This is not an RV road, but other motorists and cyclists will love it.

The city anticipates the migration, with a Whale Watching Center, beach observation decks, and charter boats for up-close viewing. Depoe Bay Harbor is known for being the smallest natural navigable harbor in the world. During storms and rough seas, the area’s unique geological features lead to a phenomenon called the “protruding horn” where, like a whale, the sea itself pours large volumes of water into the sky above the Highway.
