FRUITLAND — A district judge ordered Brandon Curtiss, founder of the 3% Idaho militia, to pay more than $110,000 in damages to victims of theft.
Curtiss, 46, from Fruitland, gets money from clients and clients through his business called Curtiss Property Management. He pleaded guilty to one count of grand theft in November 2019. His plea agreement allows for compensation to be ordered for all victims of the accused and dismissed cases.
Curtis was the man leading a group of armed men who established a secure border during a standoff at the Marher Wildlife Refuge in Oregon, involving Emmett resident Amon Bundy.
A two-day compensation hearing was held in September, and Ada County District Judge Peter Barton said he would issue a written ruling on the amount of compensation at a later date, according to the Ada County Attorney’s Office. On Wednesday, Barton ordered $94, or $846.53, to pay Curtis’s 13 victims. Five other victims have previously received compensation from Patton.
Three Percent Idaho President Brandon Curtiss Fined For Workers Comp Violations
Earlier this year, Barton sentenced Curtis to 364 days in prison and 14 years of probation. This month, Barton rejected a request from the Ida County Jail for Curtis to be released early for good behavior during his year-long sentence.
In April, Curtis asked to be released from prison because he was at risk of contracting the coronavirus. Patton declined the request. As of Thursday afternoon, Curtis was being held at the Ida County Jail.
Curtis, a former officer with the Nez Perce Tribal Police Department, had his police certificate revoked on February 27. Following a felony conviction, he was disqualified from the Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Board.

An Ada County judge has ordered Liberty Property Management to pay $7,200 after owner Brandon Curtiss failed to purchase workers’ compensation insurance for his employees.
The default judgment came after Curtis, 42, failed to respond to a civil lawsuit filed in Ada County Sheriff’s Court.
The lawsuit was filed in May by the Idaho Industry Commission, which claims Liberty Property Management has not purchased the required insurance since Oct. 1.

Around the same time, Idaho police opened an investigation into claims by at least 17 customers who claimed Curtis owed them money. Curtiss, which also owns Curtiss Property Management, collected rent from tenants but failed to deliver the money to them, the owners said.
