The city recently purchased Desert Cove Country Club, 1835 W. Anklam Road, for $1.2 million with federal pandemic relief funds.

“We felt this property would be a good site to help people transition from homelessness to independence in a short amount of time,” said Terry Galligan, deputy director of the city’s Housing and Community Development department. “They would stay at the property for up to 90 days, or until we find permanent housing for them.”

He said the city is working with Community Bridges Inc. to help oversee the Bridge Housing program, which is expected to be operational by the end of the year.

The 13,032-square-foot gated facility on the west side of ‘was originally home to the nuns who worked at the Hospital of St. In 2018, it was bought and turned into a halfway house for people who got out of prison.

Lanette Verneuil, senior property manager for Desert Cove, said there is an on-site chapel as well as a private room on the 4.5-acre site.

According to the Pima Collaboration to End Homelessness, from 2019 to 2020 there was a 60% increase in unsheltered homeless people in Pima County, from approximately 218 to 363.

WaterWalk will be a 126-room hotel with apartment-style suites, catering to business travelers or families on extended stays.

The Wichita, Kansas-based hotel has nine properties open across eight markets, including Wichita, Denver, two in Dallas, San Antonio, Overland Park, Raleigh, Charlotte and Minneapolis.

In addition, three properties are under construction in Phoenix, Boise and Jacksonville and more than 20 are in development.
