Appleby Property Management Inc – On the morning of Wednesday, September 5, HOPE’s new College-to-Work (C2C) home on Clark Avenue was bustling with community leaders, residents, volunteers, neighbors and staff members from partner agencies. All were in attendance to celebrate the grand opening and official ribbon-cutting of the new housing project, created to serve 14 students with intellectual and developmental disabilities attending the community college.

For this vulnerable population, the inability to identify and secure inclusive homes in Los Angeles County poses a serious challenge to daily living, not to mention an additional barrier to academic success. Today, a low-wage earner would have to work 92 hours a week to afford a modest one-bedroom apartment at fair market rent. In the state of California, there is no county in which a developmentally disabled person living on SSI alone can afford a moderate-priced apartment.
Located just off the Long Beach City College (LBCC) campus, this site is HOPE’s third property designed to provide an I/DD dormitory-like residential experience for I/DD youth as they complete college courses. With the ultimate goal of profitable work. This new C2C location, in the Lakewood Village neighborhood of Long Beach, sits on a 17,000+ square foot space. Along with the two adjacent buildings, a beautiful campus consists of 7 student residences and one office space for program staff. Students accepted into the program pay $350-500 per month for their housing.
Each C2C partner plays a critical role in ensuring the success of the program. Harbor Regional Center provides financial aid and case management, LBCC provides academic advising, Social Professional Services provides career guidance, and California Mentor provides on-site supportive living services. HOPE’s contribution to this partnership is through housing acquisition, rehabilitation and sustainable management. Additional project partners include Dilworth Construction, First Republic Bank, Appleby Property Management and Main Street Realtors.
“The home we believe in should not be just a roof over the heads of our residents,” said Executive Director Christine Martin. “It should also enable them to follow their dreams and make the most of their lives. This housing provides dorm-style housing for adults with developmental disabilities who attend community college but may need additional support on campus and in housing to achieve their goals.”

HOPE’s capital and foundation grants for this new home include grants from Union Bank, Western Bank, US Bank, Del Harbor Foundation and the Bess J. Hodges Foundation.
HOPE’s other C2C properties in Long Beach include a five-unit apartment building and a four-bedroom single-family home. HOPE and its partners currently serve 28 students at these three locations.
