With a significant bond allocation, they are at odds with monetary policy as they are a long-duration portfolio. While fixed income may seem attractive, REITs would be a way to secure cash flow while also acknowledging the current rate hike regime.
Most of the money has gone into the iShares Core Total USD Bond Market (IUSB) ETF. Based on this information about ETFs, we can make some statements about their exposures. Detailed positions allow us to determine the risk of rate hikes, which are likely to last longer than expected, given recent US unemployment figures that refuse to fall. The weighted average duration of IUSB is 5 years, which is not short. Indeed, just by looking at the maturity distribution, you can see that most bonds are medium maturities. These fixed coupons are not very valuable as interest rates continue to rise, and the 5-year duration means that changes in interest rates have a significant impact on bond capital appreciation, and that much of the portfolio has a future maturity of saving from Capital Amortization is outside the likely horizon of a recession, which will result in next quarter’s unemployment with a decrease is unlikely to last more than 2 years.
In addition to IUSB, there is also the iShares Core Intl Aggregate Bond ETF (IAGG), which also has a fairly high duration, probably around 5 years if you look at the maturity chart.

What’s more, 10% of this ETF is invested in unrated bonds, and much of that is Chinese government bonds. Credit quality is not really our concern, but with IAGG the total allocation to high maturity fixed income securities is over 70%.
The desire for fixed income is understandable when capital appreciation is difficult to achieve in a reliable manner. If you can be sure that your horizon is indeed 5 years, many of these bonds will mature by the time you switch funds, limiting the potential volatility of their underlying assets. But even then, it’s a more meaningful calculation because those cash flows have lost value if interest rates and inflation together remain higher than in the pre-COVID environment.
If you are looking for fixed income, there are options in equity. Think something like a REIT. They have no duration and many leases are subject to change as real discount rates increase. You also have part of the real estate portfolio. Their dividends, especially for US REITs, also tend to be reliable, and REITs perform in both recessions and recession recoveries.
