A few months ago, before the COVID-19 pandemic, I was at a crossroads in my life where I faced the daunting decision of choosing my next career path. I knew I wanted to go into the information technology (IT) sector, but I also knew that some roles were both cost and time prohibitive due to a lack of training, education, funding or experience. Much like several job seekers, I have a degree, in my case an MBA, tons of debt, and little industry experience; among other unique issues. However, the challenge did not stop there.
If you’ve ever searched for a job online, it didn’t take you long to realize how the internet has become a giant black hole of resumes and constant applications. Competition is getting tougher and the gap between talent and demand continues to grow. The value of higher education is saturated, and the theory taught is becoming stagnant and outdated. If you’re lucky enough to have a strong network, consider yourself one of the lucky ones with a head start, because it might just be enough to get you in the door. Unfortunately, I am not one of the lucky ones and had the same hill to climb as many others who are unemployed.
My research revealed how my knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) could be transferred if I were looking for the right position with my healthcare experience, but after struggling to establish myself for over two years, I knew there was a drastic change in his way of thinking and approach was fine. So, I searched for entry level internships and positions in the IT industry and found Revature.
Revature is a technology training company for entry-level IT jobs where they will not only train you but also pay you during the process. True, the pay is very low and you are often required to travel out of state for training, but anyone who has looked at boot camps knows that if you consider all the variables, fitting in can provide a ton of opportunities. What’s more, Revature is doing a great job of giving back not only by providing free coding tutorials on their website, but they recently launched an initiative to provide free training to family members of essential healthcare workers.
Successful Revature Graduate, Ask Me Anything!
Revature provides 10- and 12-week intensive software development and business analyst training programs that are closely monitored for quality assurance and quality control. Revature knows that the better their interns perform for their clients, the more demand they will achieve; therefore, not everyone who arrives at the training will finish.
Online reviews give a bleak opinion of Revature because of the low pay and pay when you meet clients, but what people miss is that Revature takes all the risks upfront and they are a business; therefore, it would be foolish to think that they will fill the growing gap between talent and demand for free.
Since I didn’t have a STEM degree, nor a technical background, the business analyst program suited me better; however, if I wanted to get into software development, I could have participated in an unpaid, four-week program called SPARK, which may have provided a path as a developer. This option wasn’t practical for me because I brought a bunch of soft skills, needed to start earning, and much better suited to their role as a business analyst.
On March 2nd, a month after applying, I sat in Reston, Virginia, in a classroom with thirty-one colleagues eager to learn. Fortunately, we were assigned one of the best trainers in the company, Abhishek Bhalerao a.k.a. “AB” but that also meant we had a very demanding 10 weeks ahead of us. I remember complaining about having difficult teachers in my undergraduate and graduate courses, but my experience and maturity have given me the ability to appreciate difficult professors and coaches; because they usually produce well-rounded students and interns. AB is no exception.
Hey Fish, I Was Just Wondering What Your Opinion …
After only two weeks of training in Reston, our company faced an unprecedented event that will likely change the course of the next few decades — COVID-19. I left the classroom in Reston, Friday afternoon, to be sitting in my home in Texas the following Monday morning. Thank God for technology and one of the biggest winners of the pandemic — Zoom.
As expected, there were definitely some hiccups, uncertainties, and concerns that arose during the first few weeks of training. We had to add another week to the training because our group was spontaneously terminated after the corporate housing seller decided to evict several trainees by giving half a day’s notice to quit and abruptly turning off the utilities in the housing units. Partners are left chasing housing arrangements and returning across the country; some have nowhere to go and no means of transportation.
Apart from this chaos, something unpredictable was happening. I discovered that because I was hiding in place, I was benefiting from the silver of the coronavirus. Not only I, but the world, used an unforeseen advantage:
One may conclude that this perspective is selfish and short-sighted, but I have discovered that there is very little in this world that I can control. As cliché as it sounds, we have to make lemonade when we’re given lemons. If you knew me on a personal level, you’d be amazed at how much lemonade I’ve had in the last four years. It was almost as if I was ready for this moment of solitude from the daily rat race of our society.

Some argue that our country is opening up too soon, some say we should never have closed. Regardless, Revature’s training continued and we had the choice to either crawl in panic or adapt. Coincidentally, adaptability is one of the core competencies of successful business analysts, and the choice was ours. Some of my colleagues could not handle the discipline necessary to excel in an unstructured environment, others were unable to grasp the concepts without very close instruction from our trainer. Unfortunately, there was rain, but there were also successes.
As we wrap up the last week of training, I sit and think about what the future holds for my colleagues and me. We are busy getting our IIBA Entry Certificate in Business Analysis (ECBA) and SCRUMStudy Scrum Master Certificate (SMC) while also completing our final project deliverables where we developed an MVP software application using Agile/Scrum methodology. Additionally, we have our final panel interviews which serve as the final check in our training, releasing us to potential clients.
It’s only human to have some concern about moving forward, but at this point our world has no choice but to find a way forward. In our new normal, we’ve had to become versatile and creative as a society, and we’re starting to see trends in technology that were just concepts in the past.
