Dice Business Analyst Salary – Data science and application development skills focused on AI, machine learning and cloud deployments remain in high demand, boosting wages in a pandemic year that has strained enterprise infrastructure.
According to a salary report published by career website Dice, average salaries for data and other technologists rose to $97,859 in 2020, a 3.6% annual increase. The increase reflects growing demand for data scientists, cybersecurity analysts and DevOps engineers who are deploying more machine learning workloads in production.

Tech workers are also gaining some clout in the labor market, with a greater emphasis on health insurance in response to COVID-19 and larger employer contributions to 401(k) accounts.

By region, Silicon Valley again topped the salary list, with a 2.4 percent increase last year to an average of about $126,000. Median salaries in New York City, home to a growing number of data science and business intelligence startups, jumped up 11.6% last year to $114,240, Dice reported.
The data science hiring surge in the Big Apple was led by Amazon Web Services and Facebook, along with fintech early adopters Bloomberg, JP Morgan Chase and Goldman Sachs.
Charlotte, North Carolina, a banking hub, saw the biggest jump in annual wages for tech workers, 13.8 percent. Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Anthem Blue Cross are among the top recruiters of data professionals, according to the salary survey.
Boston, San Diego and Baltimore round out the list of Dice’s top five salaries. Worth noting is the 5.5 percent increase in wages in Baltimore’s tech sector, perhaps indicating that the former manufacturing hub and port is making its own digital transition, fueled by world-class health and biomedical firms. Maryland, home to many bioscience companies, saw the largest increase in annual wages, an impressive 13.1 percent. New Jersey, home to several pharmaceutical giants and biotech firms, leads the nation in average annual tech salaries at $111,233.
Industries With The Best Salary For Tech Pros
The only U.S. city to see a decline in annual wages for tech workers was Seattle, which fell 2.6 percent to $106,723.
Dice’s survey list of highest average salaries by occupation reflects the accelerating migration of data and analytics tools to the cloud. IT managers and “cloud engineers” are among the highest-paid positions, with annual salaries in the $135,000 to $145,000 range.
Further down the list in terms of average annual salary are “data architects” ($133,000) and data scientists (closer to $120,000). Salaries for data scientists are increasing at an annual rate of 12.8 percent, second only to cybersecurity analysts (16.3 percent).
(Dice noted that its sample size for these two job categories was less than 100 respondents, acknowledging that its research data “are not statistically valid.”)

The salary survey found that critical data science skills include developing data pipelines along with training and implementing “classification algorithms.”
Employers took an average of 49 days to hire data science candidates. Meanwhile, the demand for data professionals is projected to grow by 19 percent over the next decade.
As “data becomes increasingly valuable to businesses in nearly every industry, demand has greatly increased for data professionals who can successfully analyze data in ways that executives and employees can use to grow their businesses,” concludes the Dice study.
Meanwhile, demand and annual salaries for data engineers responsible for building and maintaining data infrastructure, including everything from data preparation to storage, are also expected to grow. Key skills include managing databases and data warehouses, most of which are cloud-based.

Application categories driving demand for data scientists and engineers, along with DevOps professionals, include machine learning, natural language processing, application containers, and MapReduce.
Dice’s survey of registered job seekers and site visitors was conducted between September 29 and December 9, 2020. The survey generated 9,143 completed responses, Dice said.

Continued demand for technologists is also reflected in compensation growth in both traditional and emerging technology centers.”
National technologists in both established and emerging tech hubs saw significant salary increases in 2020, although the nation’s most prominent tech hubs are still the destination for technologists seeking the highest salaries. In New York, the average technologist salary rose 11.6% between 2019 and 2020, reaching $114,274. Boston salaries reached $111,069, while Silicon Valley’s average salary was $126,801, making it the highest paid US tech hub Boston and Silicon Valley saw wage growth of 2.4%, cementing their status as established tech hubs. In Austin, wages rose 9.7 percent to $104,344 over the same period.
Emerging tech hubs also saw some of the highest growth over the year, including areas such as Charlotte (+13.8% to $99,691), Orlando (+13.4% to $88,598), Detroit (+7.7%) , to $90,110) and Houston (+7.1%, to $99,727), where local officials have been working to strengthen the tech scene for many years.
At the state level, Texas continues to emerge as a top tech state (+5.6% year-over-year), prompting talk of competition with California (+1.9% year-over-year) as a major hub. Both states’ tech hubs have seen high wages and steady raises, but Texas boasts an influx of high-profile companies building new headquarters, including Oracle and Tesla.

The occupations and skills that saw the biggest wage increases between 2019 and 2020 were those that helped organizations organize and analyze data, digitize and otherwise develop their product offerings and ensure their organizations remain efficient, profitable, safe and secure during the pandemic.

Cyber Security Analyst saw average salary increase to $103,106 in 2020 (+16.3%), and Cloud Engineer roles grew 6.3% to $136,479 in 2020.
