Using this benchmark allows us to account for the fact that some states are more expensive to live in. For example, the average salary for business analysts in California is $96,550 and the average salary in Oregon is $83,780, but Illinois salaries actually go further in paying for life’s essentials.
For development and overall ranking, we have rated each state on a scale of 1 to 50, where 1 is the best.

A business intelligence analyst’s job varies by company, but key questions usually revolve around KPIs. How does the company work? What are sales markers? A BI analyst takes a top-down approach to answering those questions. For example, let’s say my company’s sales are down. A BI analyst will work to identify whether that decline is coming from a specific area, a specific product/service, a specific sales rep, etc.

Typically, BI analysts work to ensure data is ready for use from sources and work with other roles such as database administrators and data engineers. Data analysts work very closely with customers (internal and external) to meet their data needs and they also work with BI analysts. Many times these roles are actually mixed. Anyone who wants to join BI should have technical and non-technical knowledge and skills. This list is not exhaustive, but highlights several that will serve an analyst well.
You don’t need to come from a technical background, but be willing to learn the technical side of the job. Having a business background is really helpful as it helps you understand business issues, understand the business and generate insights for stakeholders. It helps to ask the right questions to understand the needs of the business. Technical knowledge is helpful in this field as you can provide insights into what you can offer. As you move deeper from the data analyst role to the BI analyst role and the mix between the two, more technical skills like SQL are required. I would recommend anyone in a data oriented role to have a solid knowledge of Excel, SQL and a visualization tool like Tableau.

Before bootcamps, how did you become a BI analyst in general? Is business intelligence a skill that can be learned at a bootcamp? Why?
I personally didn’t get a data degree, but rather learned on the job throughout my career and actually taught myself SQL. I eventually got a Masters in Computer Information Systems, but that wasn’t necessary for a business intelligence career! At General Assembly’s Data Analytics Bootcamp, we not only teach the tools, but also how to develop a hypothesis and work through the empirical process. Students create an Excel project, then a SQL project and finally a table project.
You can learn different tools and techniques for business intelligence in different programs like Micro Masters (which are longer) offered by General Assembly or various colleges. There are “boot camp programs” but this is usually longer than a 1 day session. There are entire degree programs in data analytics.
