Naturally, managers and directors in charge of account executives tend to earn higher salaries than those who manage teams of sales development representatives. Here are some average salaries for sales management positions.

Bridge Group’s research also revealed some of the key challenges facing sales teams today. Not surprisingly, the number one challenge facing sales teams is improving productivity and performance. According to the table, only two-thirds of delegates hit the quota (other reports estimate even fewer delegates hit their numbers). To determine which sales jobs can earn you the most commission, we analyzed which jobs had the highest gross earnings in the previous year. The higher the gross earnings, the higher the commission.

A sales representative earns a commission for closing a deal for their company. Commission rates vary widely by industry, account size and company. In SaaS sales, an enterprise account executive typically earns a 10% commission on each transaction. If you’re in sales at a company like Salesforce where multi-million dollar deals are the norm, and you consider these commission rates, you can certainly close half a million a year.

If the agent closes several key deals and earns 500% of quota, the total commission earned is $150,000 * 5x quota = $750,000. Add the base salary of $150,000 ($150,000+$750,000). And you’re at $900,000, gross earnings for the year are about $1 million. And this doesn’t include commission accelerators that increase your commission payout rate.

Although getting 500% or 250% of the quota is very common, it definitely happens. You need to find sales jobs that consistently put you in that position to get that million dollar commission potential.

Note: Base salary, signing bonus and stock bonus are fixed amounts for sales reps and do not vary with performance. Only a sales representative’s commission payment is variable and reflects performance.

When you look for high commission sales jobs, if they meet all of the criteria above, and you make 200%+ of your quota, you can pull off $500,000 or more per year.
