Hope to go to higher education? Did you attend any type of higher education? If yes, how did you pay for it?

My parents always stressed that we should work hard and do well in school, but there was never a clear expectation from them that I would go. It definitely felt like a societal/personal expectation I had of myself. I excelled in school and worked hard to be the best in my class and my teachers expected me to do great things. I honestly never thought about how I would pay for college because I knew my family was too poor to qualify for financial aid. In fact, I matriculated from a top private university where 100% of my tuition was covered by scholarships and financial aid.

How did you talk about money growing up? Did your parent/guardian(s) educate you about money?

My parents have always been very sensitive about spending, but there was never a conversation about how to save or manage money. They avoided credit cards and loans, bought only what they needed, and clipped coupons when they could. They were very frugal and did things like reuse take-out containers and plastic bags. Much of what I know now about how to manage money and wealth has been self-taught or learned from peers/online.

It was kind of a rite of passage for my family to work at Best Buy because both of my older sisters worked there, so I applied as soon as I turned 16. I hated the job, but it was the only way for me. Spending any meaningful amount of money to feel like a normal teenager (ie gas, clothes, restaurants). Best Buy also paid $7.50 or so, which was slightly above minimum wage – which made me feel like I was getting it! Unfortunately, I spent it almost as quickly as I earned it, so I saved very little of this for college.

I knew my parents didn’t make a lot of money, so I was always self-conscious about our income level compared to my peers. This caused me great anxiety growing up trying to hide my home life from my friends. I never invited them over, tried to park far away to hide the fact that I drove a cheap used car, and worked as hard as I could at my part-time job to provide for “normal” teenage things. This instilled in me a strong desire for independence so that I could forge my own path to create the life I wanted.

How A 27 Year Old Earning $100,000 In Orange County Spends Her Money

I have a technical, in-demand skill set, so job security precludes worrying about money on an existential level, but I think about it constantly. I’ve been tracking every cent I spend in an Excel spreadsheet for the past five years so I’m aware of where I’m spending money. I’m not sure what my life will look like 10 years from now (kids? early retirement?), but I’m constantly spinning my wheels wondering if I’ll have enough for any and all of these possibilities. I also like to help my parents and siblings to be able to remove financial pressure from their lives. I have given several cash gifts to some family members to help with various expenses and I would like to give more.

At what age are you financially responsible for yourself and do you have a financial safety net?

By the time I was 18 and going to college, my parents were no longer responsible for housing and feeding me. I feel like I could turn to my parents/family if I was in dire straits, but I don’t think they would be able to help me much other than having a warm bed to sleep in. I paid everything. My own expenses in college with money I got from financial aid/scholarships and working part-time.

I got an allowance from my mom growing up (like $20 a week) until I started working part time. I saved all this up over the years and when I started college I was able to buy a laptop. Other than that, I don’t expect to inherit money from my parents.

7:45 – It’s Sunday morning and I’m out of bed before 9am – it’s a miracle! My boyfriend, O., is planning to run with a colleague and I’m tagging along. We left home at 8 and met his colleague B. at nearby ocean bluff. We went for a quick three mile walk to B. Let’s chat a little. He tells us that he is moving fast and I am nervous. We moved to OC a few months ago for O.’s new job and are looking for new friends.

A.M. 9:30 — After we part ways with B., O. decides we should treat ourselves to a “healthy” smoothie, so we walk back home, stopping at an overpriced juice shop along the way. O. and I usually put our items in one tab and split it down the middle; My half is $17, which buys me a 32 ounce “Green Day” smoothie bowl. It’s really criminal that a smoothie costs so much, but I’ve recently found peace that places like this exist and it’s okay to indulge once in a while. At least it’s tasty (and healthy??). I eat half and put the rest in the fridge at home. $16.82

A.M. 10:15 – After a quick shower and face wash, I do my morning skincare routine – Paula’s Choice niacinamide, The Ordinary hyaluronic acid and moisturizer. I started this routine last December and can’t say I’ve noticed a difference in my skin, and I’ve already bought all the stuff so I’ll keep using it. I have some very overripe bananas, so I’m working on turning them into banana bread. I’ve caught up on a few episodes

12 p.m. – The banana bread comes out of the oven and, as usual, it’s not quite right; It’s closer to bread than banana bread. This time, I didn’t have the volume of banana mash called for in the recipe, and I forgot that I had to make up for the lost liquid volume. I eat a slice anyway and eat the other half of my smoothie bowl. (In Zeno’s Paradox, if I keep doing this, will I have infinite smoothies?)

California Moves To Curb Local Economic Development Tax Incentives. It Might Want To Try Cooperation Instead.

At 1 p.m. – O. asks if I want to talk about what happened yesterday. Yesterday evening we had a small argument while walking home from the beach and since then there has been a bit of tension between us. Basically, I really like to keep things clean and clutter-free, and O. tells me it’s annoying to “raise” things that don’t fit. We share our perspectives but we never really come to a solution. I feel invisible, unappreciated and stigmatized, but I guess that’s life as a woman.

4:30 p.m. – Lack of solid food at lunch makes me hungry and can’t eat dinner without a snack. I panfry some mini chicken wontons (courtesy of Costco) and finish it off with some peanut M&Ms (giant tubs also courtesy of Costco). Then O. and I play Zelda for a few hours on his Nintendo Switch. We started this game recently as a new “pair activity” and progressed by taking turns passing the remote back and forth. I’m definitely better with puzzles and he’s better at dealing with bad guys.

6:30 p.m. – After a gruesome and untimely death, we call it quits and start preparing dinner. We rummage around our fridge and make Caprese salad with a side of steamed Japanese yams.

Along with a bowl of strawberries bought at the farmer’s market yesterday. This show came highly recommended, but we still couldn’t get past it
