Furthermore, Level-8 is for directors (several hundred), Level-7 for senior management (several thousand), Level-6, 5 & 4 for managers and individual contributors (several tens of thousands). A typical job offer for a technical role at Amazon (eg Amazon Software Development Engineer) should include the following monetary elements:

Your recruiter will share your Amazon offer letter with sections that outline each element that makes up your total compensation. The chart below shows the base salary and signing bonus segments.
We recommend that customers change the offer letter to a 4-year table. This helps you evaluate the offer from a TC (total compensation) perspective, which is especially useful given the different salary structures at large tech companies. The example below shows Amazon’s average salary for the 2021 L5 Seattle offer.
Amazon’s annual total compensation is actually higher in years 1 and 2 because it informally participates in the 15% annual stock appreciation. This is certainly a bold assumption, and we recommend that it not be considered when comparing job offers. See below for an Amazon recruitment email that outlines this.
A high-level overview of Amazon’s typical salary and overall pay structure is certainly helpful, but there are a lot of important nuances to each of these factors that are quite different at Amazon compared to companies like Facebook and Google. We’ll share as much general advice as possible below, but if you’re looking for some personal advice, we recommend signing up for a call with our negotiation team.
Calling $116k Underpaid To Provoke The Masses (a Very Real Story)
Amazon famously had a base salary cap of $160K in Seattle ($185K in SF/NYC), and recruiters loved to remind candidates that Jeff Bezos was subject to the same base salary. However, in 2022, Amazon raised its base salary cap to $350K. Most roles do not reach the base salary cap as total salary is still made up of many factors. However, for senior clients and executives, your base salary can now be capped at $350K.
Since it’s impossible to raise your base salary above this cap (this is true, not an Amazon negotiation tactic), if your starting offer was $900K in the first year with a $350K base salary, it’s a much better strategy to focus your denial on the signing bonus and the RSU components.
Year 2 signing bonus. The reason Amazon offers this is actually related to a special component, the RSU, which we’ll cover in detail shortly.
A quick summary is that Amazon only pays out a small portion of their equity in year 1 and year 2, and as a result they offer signing bonuses in both years to ensure that the price is the same over all 4 years.

Recruiters and hiring managers typically have considerable flexibility to increase signing bonuses. In some situations with highly competitive candidates, we have seen these numbers double from the initial offer to the final offer.
These signing bonuses are paid monthly for the first 2 years and are non-refundable (ie you don’t have to pay back the money you’ve earned) if you leave during that 2-year period.
This point is often misplaced in other articles, so we’ve included the wording we’ve seen in all of our Amazon deals:
“In appreciation of your decision to join us, you will be entitled to a sign-on payment of $151,000.00. This sign-on payment will be issued in prorated installments of salary upon completion of your first year of employment with the Company. Each installment will be earned upon payment.

If your employment with the Company is terminated for any reason before the first anniversary of your start date, you will receive one final prorated payment based on the days worked in your last pay period. No extra installments will be paid.”
Finally, this bonus is taxed as ordinary, not special, income, which can be a tax break.
Many large technology companies vest RSUs evenly over 4 years. This means that if you receive $400K RSUs, you will receive the following:
This is the case with companies like Facebook and Microsoft. In addition, these companies have more frequent accrual days during the year. At Facebook, shares are vested every 3 months.

However, Amazon does not follow this approach. Amazon RSUs are 5% in year 1, 15% in year 2, 40% in year 3, and 40% in year 4.
